Yugioh Card Summoner

CH.458 Fusion Gate Tournament – part 1

CH.458 Fusion Gate Tournament – part 1

And so, the day for my first Yugioh tournament arrived.

I had a total of fourteen competitors signed up, plus Alice and Nevelle for a total of sixteen. Less than I was hoping for, but more than I was fearing. At least we got more than 10.

With the numbers, I could do a few types of tournaments. The main one would be the type you are most used to, the elimination tournament. But I didn’t like the idea, as some people would only get one match.

So instead, I broke the sixteen competitors into four groups of four. Each of those groups will then have their own round robin style qualifiers, from which the overall winner gets to the top four. The top four will then be in an elimination-type tournament, and the winner will get to duel me.

Winning against me does grant an additional reward, that of Victory Dragon and three Troop Dragons, while winning the regular part of the tournament grants you Gaia The Fierce Knight and Gilford the Legend. As well as the very much coveted Card Summoner skill orb.

Spoiler

And you’ll also get a custom duel disk, but that will come later, because I will have to custom make one for the winner.

… admittedly, I originally wanted to give the winner a Fusion monster, for obvious reasons, but also for reasons, I don’t think that is a good idea. That reason being Polymerization.

Spoiler

In short, Polymerization is OP. In long, since you can use it on real people, as long as they agree to it, I really don’t want to have a loose copy of Poly going around.

The only one currently holding a copy of Poly, outside of HomeBase, is Christina. She needed one for her Amazoness fusions. But other than that, nope. And that is for the best.

Christina knows what Poly can do. She was there during the Jenna experiment. So I don’t think she will misuse her card. But some random noble. … Yeah. I’m not going to take that risk.

I naturally taxied all of the competitors to HomeBase, which I had moved to be over Ruiso Royal Capital for the tournament. Over half the competitors came from the capital, but there were a few coming from other places, so I had to taxi them here.

The notable people were Cressida, one of Alice’s aunts and the … assistant? of Elias. I don’t actually know her real job title, but she does work with the Second Prince.

Elias naturally also took part. I made sure to tell him that he cannot order Cressida to lose to him on purpose, or I’d disqualify them both.

Mateo Garner, husband of Angelina, also took part. Sadly he was the only one from Sawyer city, but at least someone from there came.

As a somewhat surprising competitor, a young-ish dwarf from Smorog came to take part in the competition. He heard about it from Claus, since I did send him the advertisement.

And finally, as a somewhat of a surprise guest, Ula, the resident cat-girl ‘guide’ from the Hero’s country also came to participate.

Then there were Alice and Nevelle, but you already knew that.

The others were nobody nobles from the Capital that I didn’t really know.aka. they will lose in the qualifiers.

After everyone was here, I made a quick opening speech. Then Einar, Eline and Molly gave all the competitors their decks. Yes, they did have to submit their deck lists when they signed up, so I had them ready to go. And after everyone confirmed that their decks were good, we were ready to start.

For the initial brackets, Nevelle ended up in a bracket with random nobles. She was running a deck focused on Master of Oz, with Rabid Horseman and Sanwitch as additional fusions.

Spoiler

Though honestly speaking, she never summoned Sanwitch, instead just using its two fusion materials, Sangan and Witch of the Black Forest for their effects. But she did have the fusion in her extra deck, even if she never did summon it.

Spoiler

Nevelle won her own bracket, winning all three matches she had, and was the only one to come to the finals without losing a single duel. Not sure if it was because of her deck building, or because she was lucky. Maybe a bit of both. She did turbo out Master of Oz quite quickly.

… it might also be because two of her opponents were running Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, both with no draw power and just some janky monsters.

The next qualifier had Alice and the dwarf Claus sent our way.

The dwarf was running a Machine deck. Kind of. His main fusions were Steam Gyroid and Labyrinth Tank, though he relied more on the fusion materials of those two monsters, rather than the monsters themselves.

Spoiler

He did so by having some decent Equip Spells, like Mist Body and Black Pendant, along with the effects of Cannon Soldier and Steamroid.

Spoiler

Oh by the way. United we Stand and Mage Power weren’t a part of the card pool for the tournament, as they are just a bit too powerful.

Spoiler

Alice naturally had her own Red-Eyes / Thunder Dragon fusion deck.

Alice ended up winning their qualifiers, probably thanks to running Magic Cylinder. That trap was able to do some work for her because of the limited backrow destruction.

Spoiler

… Alice was also the only one in her qualifiers who ran both Pot and Graceful at 3. The dwarf did have three Pots, but no Gracefuls.

Spoiler

Elias and Mateo were in the next qualifier.

Elias had a Blue-Eyes Ultimate deck, but he also ran some weaker fusions, and main deck monsters, like the Sanwitch package. He also maxed out all of his drawing power, tripling up on Pot, Graceful and he even ran three copies of Upstart Goblin.

Spoiler

Thanks to all of that, he actually was able to summon Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon most of the time, even if he didn’t do so on turn one.

Mateo ran a deck based on LV.6 fusions and the Fusion Weapon equip spell. It worked decently for him, but in the end, Elias did end up winning their qualifier round.

Spoiler

The last one naturally had Cressida and Ula.

Cressida was running her own version of Master of Oz turbo, but it didn’t go as well for her as it did for Nevelle. Maybe because Cressida didn’t actually run the Sanwitch package.

Or maybe because Ula did what I was hoping someone would do. Ula was running Non-Fusion Area, along with the best LV.4 monsters you could get, so she was shutting down the boss monsters of other competitors, while herself just having the stronger monsters.

Because of that, Ula won her qualifier round, leaving us with our top four.

Nevelle, Alice, Elias and Ula.

The semi-finals started off with Nevelle vs. Alice. After a quick coin toss, I was the one tossing the coin by the way, Nevelle got the honor of going first in the first duel.

She began by playing Graceful Charity, drawing three and discarding Big Koala and Mystic Horseman. She then set two Spells and/or Traps, set one monster and passed the turn.

Spoiler

For Alice’s turn, she began by drawing a card. She used a Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy one of Nevelle’s set cards, which was Call of the Haunted.

Spoiler

She then discarded a Thunder Dragon, adding two more to her hand. She then used the Fusion Gate Field Spell to fuse together her two Thunder Dragons, and summoned Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon.

Spoiler

She then used Monster Reborn to summon Nevelle’s Big Koala from her GY.

Spoiler

And then, Alice attacked. Big Koala attacked, and destroyed Nevelle’s set monster, Des Kangaroo. Maybe Nevelle’s plan was to summon back Big Koala, fuse it with the set Kangaroo, and go from there.

Spoiler

Alice then attacked directly with Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon, but Nevelle used her set Sakuretsu Armor to destroy the monster.

Spoiler

Alice ended her turn by setting one card face down.

Spoiler

And so, it was back to Nevelle. She drew a card and as soon as it was her main phase, she activated the Pot of Greed. And yes, it did allow her to draw two cards.

Spoiler

She then used one of them, her own Monster Reborn, to summon Alice’s Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon to her side of the field. Following it up, she normal summoned Witch of the Black Forest.

Spoiler

Nevelle attacked with both her monsters, Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon destroyed Alice’s Big Koala, and Witch of the Black Forest got in a direct attack. Alice didn’t use her set card, so her life points dropped to 6800.

Nevelle then activated Silent Doom, calling back out her Big Koala. She then fused the Big Koala with a Des Kangaroo in her hand to summon out Master of Oz.

Spoiler

Did the play leave Nevelle with no cards in her hand and no set back row? Yes. But she also has one of the strongest tournament allowed monsters on the field, alongside Alice’s Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon and her own Witch of the Black Forest.

Would I have played differently? Probably. I probably wouldn’t have summoned Master of Oz this turn, as there really wasn’t a big need for it. But we will see how this goes.

Alice’s turn. She drew, and then activated her own Pot of Greed. She followed that up by activating Graceful Charity, so she drew three more cards, before discarding two. She tossed out her Brain Control, the best allowed monster stealing card, and a Summoned Skull.

Spoiler

She activated Soul Absorption, before using the Field Spell to fuse together Red-Eyes Black Dragon and Meteor Dragon, and summoned Meteor Black Dragon, gaining 1000 life points.

Spoiler

With her Meteor Black Dragon, Alice then attacked and destroyed the stolen Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon.

She ended her turn by setting her last card face down.

Spoiler

Nevelle’s turn, and she drew a card. She didn’t use it, instead moving directly to her battle phase, attacking Alice’s Meteor Black Dragon with Master of Oz.

But the attack didn’t go through, as Alice used the card she set last turn, Magic Cylinder, to stop the attack and inflict 4200 damage to Nevelle.

Spoiler

Nevelle then entered her main phase 2. Swapped her Witch of the Black Forest from attack mode to defense, and ended her turn.

Alice’s turn. After her draw, she normal summoned Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1.

Spoiler

She then went to her battle phase, destroying Witch of the Black Forest with her just summoned dragon. Nevelle used Witch’s effect to search out Battle Ox.

Spoiler

Alice then revealed her set card, the one she set on her first turn. It was Compulsory Evacuation Device and she used it to return Nevelle’s Master of Oz to the extra deck.

Spoiler
Spoiler

With a clear field, Alice used her Meteor Black Dragon to attack directly, winning the first duel of the match.

And so, Alice made Nevelle lose her first duel of the tournament.

For the second duel, Nevelle decided that Alice would go first.

Alice did so, setting a monster and one face down.

On her turn, Nevelle activated three copies of Pot of Greed and two Graceful Charities, getting quite deep into her deck and building up her hand. She then used her own Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Alice’s set card, which was Anti-Fusion Device.

Spoiler

She then used a Silent Doom to bring back a discarded Big Koala, fused it with a Des Kangaroo in her hand and summoned out her Master of Oz. But not being ready to stop there, Nevelle instantly banished another copy of both Big Koala and Des Kangaroo to fusion summon a second Master of Oz. And as if that wasn’t enough, she then banished Battle Ox and Mystic Horseman to summon out Rabid Horseman.

Spoiler

She used her Rabid Horseman to destroy Alice’s set Fairy Dragon, followed by the two Master of Oz attacking Alice directly and ending the second duel.

Spoiler
Spoiler

For the third duel, Alice made Nevelle go first.

Nevelle did so, and started by setting a monster. She then played Double Summon to set another monster, and ended her turn by setting a spell/trap.

Spoiler

Alice began her turn with Pot of Greed, followed by a Graceful Charity. She discarded Red-Eyes and Re-Fusion.

Spoiler

She activated Soul Absorption, before banishing Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1 and Fairy Dragon to fusion summon Kaiser Dragon. She then normal summoned a Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1.

Spoiler

Alice attacked with both of her monsters, and since Nevelle didn’t activate her set card, it might not be a battle trap. Or maybe Nevelle is saving it for later.

Her two set monsters were Sangan and Witch of the Black Forest, which could also explain why Nevelle didn’t stop the attacks. With Sangan, she searched out a Des Kangaroo, while Witch of the Black Forest searched out Battle Ox.

Alice then set two spell/traps, before ending her turn.

Spoiler

Nevelle’s turn and she started off with a Pot of Greed. She followed that up with a Graceful Charity, drawing three, discarding Battle ox and Fusion Weapon.

Spoiler

Nevelle then fusion summoned twice, calling out two copies of Master of Oz. Naturally because Alice has her Soul Absorption, she got 1000 life points for each summoning, so she now had a total of 11,000 life points.

Nevelle moved to attack Alice’s Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1 with one of her Master of Oz, but Alice stopped it with her set Magic Cylinder, burning Nevelle for 4200.

Nevelle then attempted the same with the second Master of Oz, only to have a Anti-Fusion Device flipped on her, destroying her Master of Oz.

Nevelle then set her last card, before ending her turn.

Alice’s turn. She didn’t do much. Just changed her monsters to defense, set one monster, set one spell/trap, and ended her turn.

Spoiler

Nevelle’s turn. She activated a copy of Graceful Charity, drew three cards, and discarded a Mystic Horseman and a Sangan. She then activated a Pot of Greed, drawing two more.

Following that came Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Alice’s set card, which was another Magic Cylinder.

Nevelle then flipped her Call of the Haunted, summoning back her Master of Oz, before she equipped Big Bang Shot from her hand to her other Master of Oz.

Spoiler

Nevelle the attacked with her two Master of Oz. The Big Bang Shot one destroyed Winged Dragon, inflicting 3400 piercing damage. The other Master of Oz then attacked Alice’s face down monster, which was a Fairy Dragon.

Nevelle ended her turn and it was again Alice’s turn.

After her draw, she activated Card of Demise. It may have been a mistake to allow the anime version of the card, but oops, what can I do.

Spoiler

Because of the spell, Alice drew 5 cards.

She then activated MST and destroyed Nevelle’s Big Bang Shot, banishing the equipped Master of Oz while at it, and gaining Alice another 500 life points.

Alice then used Dark Core, discarding a Summoned Skull and banishing Nevelle’s remaining Master of Oz. And again, gaining 500 more life points.

Spoiler

Alice then fused the last two cards in her hand and fusion summoned Meteor Black Dragon. She then changed Kaiser Dragon to attack position, and declared an attack with both. The Kaiser Dragon’s attack went through, leaving Nevelle with 1500 life points, but when Meteor Black Dragon attacked, Nevelle used her set Sakuretsu Armor to destroy it.

She was still holding on, but with no cards in hand and only 1500 life points, it wasn't looking the greatest.

Spoiler

But Nevelle didn’t give up, instead just drawing another card. And lucky her, it was her third and final copy of Pot of Greed, allowing her to draw two more.

She then activated Poison of the Old Man, using the effect to gain 1200 life points.

Spoiler

Following it, she now had enough life points to activate her other spell, Dimension Fusion. Nevelle summoned out her two Master of Oz, two Big Koala and one Des Kangaroo, while Alice summoned Red-Eyes Black Dragon, Meteor Dragon and Fairy Dragon, all in defense.

Spoiler

Nevelle then used her monsters to destroy all of Alice’s monsters. The two Master of Oz attacked over the attack position Kaiser Dragon and Meteor Black Dragon, inflicting a total of 2600 life points of damage, leaving Alice with 6000.

During her main phase 2, Nevelle then fused together a Big Koala and Des Kangaroo on her field, to fusion summon her third Master of Oz. Alice gained another 1000 life points, thanks to her Soul Absorption.

Nevelle ended her turn,

Alice’s turn and she drew a card. Sadly, it seemed to be useless, as Alice had no choice but to end her turn.

Spoiler

So the turn returned to Nevelle, and she didn’t hesitate. She attacked directly with two Master of Oz, ending the duel and winning the match.

After the duel, I went with Alice because I wanted to ask her something. I knew the card she drew on her last turn, and I wanted to ask why she didn’t use it.

“... she deserved the win.” Alice said. “Think about it. What do I get if I win? Basically nothing I don’t already have. But Nevelle. She actually has a prize worth fighting for.”

“... so you felt bad. You already prevented everyone from your qualifiers from getting here, but you didn’t want to stop Nevelle.”

“Pretty much. And I will admit, drawing a Re-Fusion in that situation was just pure luck, not skill.”

“I don’t think you need to talk about luck. Nevelle had a ton of it.”

“I know. … I just did what felt right at that moment. Besides, I think I’ll enjoy watching her duel her big brother.”

“... you are saying that as if you already know Elias will win against Ula.”

“I just have a feeling he will.” Alice said.

“Yeah. Maybe he will.” I agreed.
