Chapter 103

Chapter 103 - A Simple Thought

“What?” Ye Hao's expression shifted upon hearing this.

“I can still recall the smile on that female corpse's face. It was so chillingly sinister that it sent shivers down my spine,” Zhang Lan said gravely.

“Are you able to trace the origins of that female corpse?”

“I can't.”

“You can't?” Ye Hao asked, taken aback. “Shouldn't there be a record for every donated body?”

“No, because some bodies that remain unclaimed in the morgue for an extended period might be sent to research institutions,” Zhang Lan explained.

“Is there an anatomy class today?”

“No.”

“Did that female corpse smile only at you?”

“I was the only one who saw it.”

Ye Hao nodded in understanding.

Ye Hao's presence in the classroom caused quite a stir.

He had entered with Zhang Lan, and it had been over a month since he last attended class.

Didn't he worry about failing?

The first class was taught by Leng Xue.

However, Leng Xue was clearly off her game today, making three mistakes in just ten minutes. Realizing she wasn't fit to continue, she projected a movie for the class using her computer.

Shortly after, Leng Xue approached Ye Hao. “Step outside with me, please.”

With the class watching in surprise, Ye Hao followed Miss Leng out of the room.

“Miss Leng, is something troubling you?”

“Yes.”

“Is there anything I can do to help?” Ye Hao inquired with a smile.

“Could you pretend to be my boyfriend?” Leng Xue asked hesitantly, locking eyes with Ye Hao.

“Go ahead.”

“Tonight, the Leng family and the Soong family are hosting a strategic alliance meeting. Soong Yu from the Soong family will publicly propose to me.”

“Am I unable to refuse?”

“You can't refuse.”

“The Leng and Soong families are among the elite in Glento. Aren't you concerned for my safety if I get involved?”

“You're the only person I know who can help me.”

“Okay.”

“You're agreeing?” Leng Xue's eyes brightened.

“Why wouldn't I?” Ye Hao laughed heartily. “Not just anyone gets the chance to be your boyfriend.”

“A fake boyfriend?”

“Even though I'm just your fake boyfriend, I could still take advantage of the situation, couldn't I?”

“Ye Hao.”

“I'm joking.” Ye Hao quickly added, noticing Leng Xue was on the verge of losing her temper.

“You need to remember that I am your teacher.”

“Have you ever heard of a teacher asking a student to pretend to be her boyfriend?”

“Ye Hao.” Leng Xue's voice rose sharply.

The classmates all peeked over curiously.

“Miss Leng, could you please be mindful of your image?” Ye Hao said before turning on his heel and heading back to the classroom.

No sooner had Ye Hao settled into his seat than his phone buzzed with a message.

“What's going on?”

It was from Zhang Lan.

“I can't really talk about it.”

“Don't I even qualify as a friend in your eyes?” Zhang Lan sounded upset.

“Miss Leng has asked me to pose as her boyfriend.” Ye Hao reluctantly explained.

“What?”

“What's the issue?”

“Why would Miss Leng do that?” Zhang Lan was clearly not pleased.

Even though Ye Hao wasn't officially her boyfriend yet, Zhang Lan had already considered him hers. Understandably, she was upset to hear that Leng Xue had Ye Hao pretend to be her boyfriend.

“Miss Leng is in a unique situation.”

“What does that mean?”

“I can't discuss it.”

“Ye Hao.”

With that, Ye Hao pocketed his phone.

Just then, a tall girl appeared at the classroom door.

The students burst into excited chatter.

“Xu Mengmeng.”

“It's the beauty from Class Three.”

“What's Xu Mengmeng doing here?”

Xu Mengmeng's cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

She hesitated, unsure whether to stay or go.

Leng Xue reprimanded the class, and the commotion subsided.

Stepping out, Leng Xue inquired, “Xu Mengmeng, what brings you here?”

“Miss Leng, do you remember what I mentioned to you earlier?” Xu Mengmeng asked softly.

“Are you referring to the idiom competition at the universities?” Leng Xue recalled.

“That's right.”

“Just a moment,” Leng Xue said before returning to the classroom. “Ye Hao, could you step outside for a second?”

The boys in the class watched Ye Hao rise, buzzing with excitement.

Xu Mengmeng actually came looking for Ye Hao.

During military training, Xu Mengmeng wrote Ye Hao a love letter.

Is Xu Mengmeng here to publicly confess her feelings for Ye Hao?

Xu Mengmeng is so shy; I doubt she'd ever do something like that.

Zhang Lan's heart sank upon hearing this. With the whole class watching, she made her way out of the classroom.

The room buzzed with whispers.

They wondered, “What's Zhang Lan up to? Is she going to confront Xu Mengmeng?”

As Zhang Lan reached the classroom door, she overheard Xu Mengmeng softly say, “Scoring 900 points shows you have an exceptional memory, which is why I'd like to invite you to the Proverb Championship hosted by various colleges.”

“When it comes to memory, no one surpasses him,” Leng Xue chimed in.

Leng Xue was aware of Ye Hao's photographic memory.

“I don't have time,” Ye Hao declined graciously.

“The championship is taking place right here in Glento,” Xu Mengmeng added quickly upon hearing Ye Hao's refusal.

“What do you mean by ‘our'?” Zhang Lan bristled at Xu Mengmeng's wording.

“Zhang Lan, why are you out here?” Leng Xue asked with a hint of surprise upon seeing Zhang Lan step out.

“I'm heading to the restroom,” Zhang Lan replied, careful not to reveal her true intention of eavesdropping on Xu Mengmeng and Ye Hao's conversation, as it would compromise her poise as a young woman.

“Go ahead.”

Zhang Lan departed.

Leng Xue continued to encourage Ye Hao, “Riverdale College hasn't won a medal in the Proverb Championship for quite some time. If you win, you'll earn one credit.”

“Just one credit?”

“Make it to the top three, and you'll earn two credits. Help our school clinch the title, and you'll get three credits.”

“When exactly is it?” Ye Hao inquired.

“In half a month,” Leng Xue answered.

“Okay, count me in,” Ye Hao agreed.

“I'll give you all the details about the competition after class,” Xu Mengmeng said, unable to hide her excitement.

“Alright.”

Once Xu Mengmeng had departed, Leng Xue hinted, “Xu Mengmeng might have feelings for you.”

“No,” Ye Hao responded.

“Don't play dumb.”

“Miss Leng, why do I get the impression that you're holding a grudge against me?”

“I hold no grudge against you. The issue lies with you.”

“If you keep this up, I might just skip out tonight.”

“I dare you.”

“Miss Leng, have you considered the consequences?”

“Are you concerned about yourself?” Leng Xue asked, looking at Ye Hao.

“I've never worried about myself,” Ye Hao said with a smile.

“I'm aware that you're no ordinary person; otherwise, I wouldn't have chosen you,” Leng Xue reflected, then added, “The Leng family tried to arrange a marriage for me against my wishes. I believe I've already given them a graceful enough rejection.”

“You're oversimplifying the complexities of a large family,” Ye Hao said, shaking his head lightly.
