Chapter 65 The Undercity.
65 The Undercity.
A week later.
"Haha, boss Carlson has arrived!!" Inside an alleyway next to the eastern city guard house, a bunch of men in city guard uniforms could be seen. n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
"Hehe, still sneaking around, I see," one of the guards mocked. Carlson turned and looked over his shoulders, before turning back to his men.
He had been on the run for a while now, there wasn't anywhere safe, and he needed to constantly look over his shoulder, All this was because of one person.
His fiancée.
Leon had come to understand that, the lady who was chasing after Carlson at the front of the Eastern City Guard House a week ago, was actually his fiancée, and she was just trying to get him to take responsibility for his obligations.
However, Carlson didn't like the thought of being betrothed, and she was a bit of a bully, so he just kept dodging her.
"Don't tease me, please," Carlson, after checking his surroundings, sighed. She was nowhere around here.
"Today's patrol is a bit different…."
Throughout the past week, Carlson had taken them all around the eastern part of Duan city. Leon couldn't act like he knew every nook and cranny, but he definitely knew more than he did when he got here.
However, there was a place he didn't know of and was about to find out.
"No, you're kidding me, right?" One of the guards asked with widened eyes filled with panic.
"I'm a bit shocked also, but there's nothing we can say. We are going to the undercity," Carlson said with a sigh.
This was the worst patrol route any city guard could get. It was an absolute pain in the ass, because the undercity was a cesspool of crime. It was where the worst of the worst would go to live their lives, and the biggest headache of the city guards.
"No use wasting time; let's get our rounds in." Carlson tried to lift the morale of his men even though he knew this was a large inconvenience.
Nevertheless, they had no choice. They put on their helmets and began their round around the eastern part of the city. They passed through markets, backstreets, and alleyways, then, finally they arrived at an artificial canal.
There, they made their way down until they arrived before a massive gate.
"S2 patrol, Undercity guard duty." As soon as they arrived before the gate, Carlson stepped forward and showed a piece of paper to the guards in charge.
These guys weren't normal guards. They were armed to the teeth and were ready to go all out at any given moment.
"Hmm, approved." One of the guards said, after examining the piece of paper from Carlson, then he went to the gate and.....
—Clang!!!
The gate swung open
"Stay behind us kid; things might get ugly soon" Carlson looked over at Leon and advised.
He felt guilty that Leon would have to follow them into the undercity, it was no place for a kid and, of course, Leon was much weaker than the rest of them, they had to protect him.
Naturally, he was forgetting that to get into the faceless mercenary company, Leon had to at least have killed more than a dozen men. this kid might have even killed more people than himself
"Let's get this over with," Carlson commanded, and not long after, they trooped together and went through the gate, slowly descending underground.
First, it was all darkness, but the further they went down, the more touches and guards they saw. It seemed like they were protecting the main city from the undercity.
(This amount of security is just for criminals? It doesn't make sense….unless)
Slums and ghettos were filled with criminals and the sort, that didn't mean that they needed this much of a barricade from the rest of civilization. There was definitely something more to the undercity than meets the eye.
A few minutes later,
"Ahhh" Leon and the rest finally arrived at the bottom of this long canal tunnel, and what awaited them was astonishing.
It was a massive opening, the size of a small city. All around the place, there were buildings made from substandard materials, but the liveliness was apparent just by looking.
"You don't belong here."
"You guys suck."
"Filthy mages"
—wooo
While Leon and the rest made their way down the streets of the undercity, the strangest thing kept occurring. Warlocks would occasionally appear in front of them and either insult them or throw stones at them.
This was abnormal behavior. In Duan city, The Warlocks didn't have the strength to behave like this. They were usually mellow and subservient, because of their status. However, things were very different here.
"Just stay close everyone, After we sign in at the watchtower east of here, we will circle around, do our rounds and leave," Carlson assured his men.
None of them liked this place. The city guard didn't have that much control here. If they were attacked, backup would take a while to arrive, and by then, they would have become corpses.
They needed to not only be fast, but cautious too.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
"Sign here, here, and here" in front of a large watch tower in the middle of the undercity, Carlson received a piece of paper from a guard at the gate.
From the look of the security around the tower, it showed how truly dangerous the undercity was. Even a guard tower had to be barricaded to such an extent that not even city guards from outside the undercity were allowed to enter.
"Hmm, here comes the dangerous part" Carlson came before Leon and the rest and spoke.
After signing, they would need to do their rounds, and if they were lucky, they would get out without a problem. If they weren't lucky, though, it would be a big problem.
And so they started their patrol of the undercity. It was long and grueling, they were constantly harassed by the residents, but they managed to survive until the very end.
At least that was until.....
"Help!!!!"
A loud voice resounded from the distance.
