Chapter 64 Guard duty
64 Guard duty
"She's level 3" Arian, who was also watching this scene, commented. The lady was dressed like a typical housewife, but she was powerful. What was the reason for her to be chasing down a level 1 city guard?
"Hehe, stranger things have happened." Leon shook his head and proceeded to walk towards the guard house. He himself had a level 3 mage following him around, why can't others?
A few seconds later,
Leon and Arian, who were cloaked in black robes, made their way to the doors of the Eastern city guard house.
"Hm?" The guards at the front door, who seemed to be gossiping about a matter, stopped and looked over at Leon and Arians figures.
"We are here to see the chief guard," Leon waved a medallion at the guards and said. This medallion had the symbol of the faceless mercenary company, which was 3 faceless masks. Its meaning was clear enough to the guards.
One of them immediately offered to take them to see the chief guard. And so they made their way into the guard house.
It looked more like a maze, with twists and turns on every corner from the main lobby onwards. After a few twists and turns, Leon and Arian finally arrived at the door to the chief's office.
"Sir, we've got mercenaries" the guard alerted from outside the door and soon the door swung open by itself.
"Go on in" the guard showed them in before slamming the door shut behind them.
Inside the office.
Leon and Arian looked up, and their eyes landed on a middle aged man with a massive belly seated on a chair behind a table filled with paperwork.
"Good day chief" Leon and Arian took down their hoods and revealed their faceless masks.
"Ah? Faceless mercenary company? Is it that time already?" The chief guard, as soon as he set his eyes on the faceless mask, understood what was going on.
Not a lot of groups would attach themselves to city guard patrols, they had their own little teams for that. Only groups that like to maintain anonymity would go so far. So he was used to them coming around.
"I believe so" Leon nodded In confirmation.
"Okay, take a seat" the chief guard said to Leon before standing up to pick up some paperwork.
"So, what are your code names and levels?"
"Badur, beginner level 1 mage"
"Pridefulheart, peak level 1 mage"
Leon and Arian answered, but Arians answer shocked even Leon himself. Arian was a level 3 mage and was claiming to still be at level one….if anyone else heard this, they would dig a grave and Bury themselves out of embarrassment.
They were all trying to advance and brag about their strength, but Arian was hiding hers.
"Ahhh, peak level 1? That's a bit of a problem, the only team available right now only has one peak level 1 mage, and he's the team leader" the chief frowned.
He couldn't see through Arians' strength, so, he assumed that she was hiding it with some secret technique.
He suspected that she was at least close to level 2, most powerful people wouldn't like to be seen through by any Tom dick and Harry. But now that he had confirmed it, he couldn't help but point out the problem with this situation.
Two people of equal strengths in one team would usually bring discord. Arian might not want to take orders from the captain.
"Don't worry, I won't cause any issues" Arian assured the chief guard. He didn't know that she was, in fact, a level 3 mage, if not, he would definitely not agree. He himself was only at level 2.
After a brief moment of contemplating, the chief sighed. There was nothing he could actually do, his hands were tied.
"Bring Carlson over here" the chief guard commanded the guard outside the door and soon a guard with scattered silver hair entered the room.
(Oh, it is that guy again?)
Leon thought in his mind.
The person they had brought was the guy who was being chased down by the bulky lady a few minutes earlier. He had surprisingly escaped from a level 3 mage.
"These two will be attached to you for about two weeks, let them know all they need to know about the Eastern part of Duan city. They are called, Badur and Prideful heart." The chief gave instructions to the guard, and soon enough he dismissed them. Nôv(el)B\\jnn

"I'm Carlson, no need for formalities, you can call me by my name directly. I'll be showing you the ropes for these two weeks, I guess.... So just stick with me."
After leaving the chiefs' office, Carlson introduced himself to Leon and Arian. He seemed like a pretty down to earth person. Leon and Arian still couldn't help but wonder what was the problem between him and the lady from before.
"First let's get you some standard issue guard uniforms and Amour" Carlson said before turning around to lead them away.
Outside the Eastern city guard house.
Leon, Arian and three others in standard grade city guard amour, the likes of roman centurions, stood in a distant alleyway from the guard house.
"Okay guys, We have mercenary attaches today. These two are called Badur and Pridefulheart." Carlson introduced Leon and Arian to the rest of his team.
They were all level 1 mages at least with about two of them being at the middle stage of level 1. Only Leon and one other were at beginner stage.
"Ah, welcome to the team" they all welcomed Leon and Arian with open arms. Apparently, they weren't only comrades, they were all friends.
"Hehe, good….today, we will be doing rounds from the Yi stream to the market, then we'll make an U-turn and do some border patrol. From there we'll go home" Carlson gave his commands and not too long after, they set off.
While they did this, the lady who was chasing after Carlson previously broke through the doors of the guard house once again to look for him.
