Isekai Journey Of The Magic Archer

Chapter 989 Distribution of roles

[Rein's POV: ]

There were five major roles beside the Captain that one needed on a battlefield, be it a simulated battle or an actual fight with one's life on the line.

'These five major roles included the (Strategist), the person who was in charge of making what kind of strategy the entire battle unit would follow in most of the situation.

The (Watcher) who watches over the entirety of the battlefield and reports it directly to the other major individuals.

The (Commander) who gives orders to the smaller battle units on the field.

The (Informant) who gathers information on the other sides and reports them to the Commander as well as the Strategist.'

Then there's an abstract role of the (Ace). The most important unit of the entire army whose existence on the battlefield plays an important role not just as a moral support, but also as a spearhead that leads them to victory.

'Lastly, there's the (Special operators) who have the most unique roles among the other major units, something that changes the most during a battle of any nature.'

If the battle is happening in a mountainous region and the army needs someone to take out the enemy commanders silently, they would send a special operator.

If they want someone to protect the Captain of the Army, these special operators would have the duty to protect them.

If the battle required them to sacrifice their own soldiers in order to win, they would do that as well.

'It is a special role, and whenever I think about that role, I remember the words of my superior Special operator during the Southern War five decades ago…'

The moment was critical.

The battle was against an army of corrupted undead who were under the command of a calamitous Lich, someone who had achieved pseudo immortality.

'Our side was winning that battle initially. We had the best bishops of the Temple on our side.'

They were masters of Holy magic and the holy spells that they used were unlike what the students of this academy might have ever seen.

'They were unfathomably powerful, and they did not hold back with their spells back in the days.'

Those were turbulent times, and holding back on those battlefields was as good as courting death. And on those battlefields, the Special Operators that we needed had to be of brave hearts.

'A highly dangerous weapon was used on that battlefield, and the one who used that battle, even against the wishes of all the other individuals, was the special operator of that time.'

I was in charge of helping the special operator with the various tasks, a member of a special force that operated directly under him. However, I was not aware of that particular decision that he made.

'Many people from our side died because of that weapon, however, thanks to that one unforseen attack, we were able to win that war.'

But still, many people from our side died that day. And till this day, not many people know who had used that unidentified weapon on the battlefield.

'I confronted him, frustrated and angry, asking him why he would use something that clearly wasn't needed.'

We were winning the battle at first and though the situation was getting difficult because of the sudden interference of the Rakshasas, we were getting pushed back.

But we could have still won. The battle wasn't impossible to win, and yet, that weapon was used, and hundreds from our side died.

'Back then as well, I was simply a mercenary working for that side temporarily. But, I was still on their side, and working under him directly.'

Trust wasn't a thing on the battlefields. There was an order and there was a soldier who followed those orders.

Authority of those roles was much greater than what the simple roles of these battlefield simulations will ever be able to emphasise.

But that's not important right now anyway…

'I had no right to ask him why he did what he did as someone unrelated to their nation, but I still asked. And despite his refusal to answer, I still pressed further and asked him again and again for a reason that even I don't understand yet.'

But he never told me why he did it.

He simply screamed, and said the kind of responsibilities that he held, the kind of secrets that he knew, were so unfathomable to a simple mercenary like me that I would never be able to understand their importance to this world, and that battle.

'He accepted that he was the one who did it, and said if he had the choice to do it again, he would do it every single time.'

And he screamed… I remember the way he screamed right on my face till this day… he screamed that a mere mercenary soldier like me would never understand why he would have done that.

And he had no authority to tell some unrelated soldier about their state secrets.

So, he dismissed me. And after that, after the conclusion of that battle, we parted ways.

'Still, that incident remained in my mind and I tried searching for the reasons, the reason that 'I' from back then could have Actually never really understood at that moment.'

Till this day, I find that matter so complicated that the way that Senior had operated behind the scenes and what things he had done just to execute that plan, still amazes me.

And, just the fact that that amazement is on par with the things that Eon amazes me with, makes it something much more important to Me than this simple training.

[{ "You're not going to charge into Quin's side, are you?" }]

[{ "That's obviously what I am doing right now, darling." }]

[{ "You're crazy." }]

[{ "This is just a game, why take it seriously? Hehe." }]

So…

I was the Special operator this time. Eon was Ace even though it should have been the other way around, but that's just how things turned out at the end.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

'Eula is the Commander for our side, while Ball is the informant.'

Sadly, we didn't have any great individuals for the rest of the positions so we had to improvise.

'There was a watcher but Eon was also taking that role. And while we didn't have a specific strategist, we both Eon and I were guiding the whole team through Celes' connection that they were thinking to be some kind of skill or magic that I was using.'

Thankfully, no one was going to know who the Captain of our team is, so the threat to their life is low for now.

Still…

The other teams that we were against were not something that we can laugh at.

'Just like Eon and I, Quin and Chry were together, and to make things worse, they had Alf and Xlor as well.'

The kind of Damage dealers that their team had was crazy, so we had to deal with them first since the combination of a Speed based swordsman, an Origin skill user spearman, a master strategist like Quin who could single handedly take on the role of a damage dealer, a buffer, a freaking AOE dealer, as well as a weapon of mass destruction, with Alf added in the mix was the same as a one sided battle.

Even for us.

'We know Zoe's team that has Hide and Newtine could very well be a great threat as well with their technical powers, but they aren't anywhere near us.'

They are on the complete opposite side of the battlefield so they would first have to deal with Tia, Nox, Luna, and Lizzy who have their own teams around them.

Captain Alpha was unlucky this time so he doesn't really have anyone particularly strong in his team, at least from our group, so he will find it a little tough… but knowing that bastard, he will still survive till the end and come for us right when we are about to reach the goal.

'We will deal with him when the time comes, but he's harmless until then.'

One of the more important enemies that we have this time would be Mia and her careless golem Vienna, who also has Bell, Jen, Deleon, and Drownslotm in their team.'

It was a crazy powerful team, but they have Ezra and Prince Alph against them so we can at least expect a mutual destruction if nothing more.

'Luna had her own separate team like Captain Alpha, and I want them to fight one another.'

They will get closer with that, but that's just a personal wish.

[{ "I'll cover you. Just know that they are expecting you." }]

[{ "I expected that much from Quinny." }]

I was being crazy and going into enemy territory by myself.

'The only reason I got the 'Special Operator' position this time was because of the kind of freedom that it gives.'

I didn't have to listen to anyone and I wouldn't be restricted by the laws of the battlefield like most of the other individuals.

It was the best position for me under the 'hit-and-run' strategy that we had internally devised.

'There were a lot of enemies but the goal was only one.'

While we would have to fight for that goal on the bigger battlefield, the kind of strategies that one can use is going to decide the winner on this battlefield.

And I don't like losing.

All of them who know me and have had lunch or seen me during the practicals know that well.

They aren't going to win this with simple methods, that much even Quinny knew.

'Predicting what we can do wasn't going do them any good since the way to save themselves from our doings was going to decide their position on this battlefield.'

Not everyone here has experienced battlefields.

But I have…

'And I'm going to use all those decades of experience to take my Lovely~ friends down One By One~!'
