Transmigrate to another world

Chapter 44: Healing

"Ruby, I think I'm going to need your help now."

Ruby appears beside me in the inner world, she is in her human form and looks well rested. She looks at the tangle of threads and then turns to me.

Ruby says "You've made a lot of progress, how can I help you?"

"I want you to try to keep the rest of it stable while I release the thread. It keeps getting tighter and it's getting harder and harder to untangle it."

Ruby says, "Okay, I'll do my best!"

I slowly pull the thread inch by inch again. Ruby has some trouble at first, but after a few tries she figures out how to keep the rest in place. Because Ruby keeps it from tightening, I'm able to make much more progress.

I stop twice to channel my mana into the Armatite bar, but other than that, I keep undoing the blind spell. With Ruby's help, I can reduce it to about a quarter in a couple of hours.

That's when things start to go wrong, the thread I'm unraveling starts to fray. It frays faster than I can free it, soon the whole tangle is frayed and torn.

I manage to free a few more sections before it all gets out of control despite Ruby and I trying to hold it together and it explodes. The explosion takes me out of my inner world and knocks me unconscious.

When I come to, I still see nothing but darkness. I'm lying on my back and my head is resting on something soft. I groan in pain as I feel how much my head and face hurt.

Ruby says, "Stay still, don't try to get up."

"Ugh, what happened, why am I still blind?"

Ruby says, "Well, the last bit of the spell went haywire and exploded."

"Yeah, I remember that part."

Ruby says, "Well, the explosion burned your face...and destroyed your eyes."

I can hear the sadness and worry in her voice. Can my healing make my eyes grow back? Or am I going to be blind forever?

"Are you okay?"

Ruby says, "Yeah, I didn't hurt myself. I'm sorry, I couldn't keep it steady."

"Don't blame yourself, we were doing something risky from the start. I don't even know if that's how you remove a spell, it was just a guess."

The way his voice comes from behind and above me, I finally realize that my head is resting in his lap. I reach out blindly and she takes my hand and squeezes it.

"Don't worry, I'm going to try to cure my eyes through meditation. All hope is not yet lost."

Ruby says, "Is there anything I can do to help?"

"Stay with me and protect me."

I settle back and enter the inner world, once inside I can't help but smile knowing that my head is still resting in Ruby's lap. I push those thoughts out of my mind and turn around to take a look at the damage. No wonder Ruby sounded worried, my face is a mass of burns and where my eyes should be there are only sunken holes.

I start with the burns, healing them and regrowing my hair. That's the most visible thing and I hope that seeing them heal will reassure Ruby that I'll be okay, though I'm still not sure myself. When all the burns are healed and my hair is back to normal, I turn my attention to where my eyes should be.

First I heal the optic nerve damage, this relieves my headache and allows me to more easily work on getting my eyes to grow back. My understanding of how eyes work is pretty basic, luckily I know that my body contains the blueprint of how it is supposed to work.

So all I have to do is concentrate on restoring things to their normal state and let my body do the rest. It takes me a few hours of intense concentration, but I can help my body regenerate my eyes.

I come out of meditation and blink rapidly several times to focus my eyes. The first thing I see is Ruby's upside-down face smiling at me. I smile back at her.

"Good to see you!"

Ruby laughs and says, "It's good to see you, are you completely healed now?"

"Yes, everything is back to the way it should be!"

Ruby says, "Good! I was really worried!"

"Yeah, to be honest, me too. But everything is fine now, except that I'm starving."

As Ruby laughs, I reluctantly remove my head from her lap and sit up. Stretching out, I smell my own odor and realize I'm dirty.

"I'm going to clean up and get something to eat, then I'll probably sleep for a while. You can go rest if you want and I'll call you when I'm ready to go back to that cave."

Ruby says "Okay!" and gives me a tight hug before disappearing back inside the amulet.

I quickly locate the purification stone and clean myself and my clothes, then go to find food. Unfortunately, the alligator meat I had has gone bad, so I end up going fishing.

After catching a couple of fish, I throw the rancid alligator meat into the river and then set about preparing fish and mushroom soup. While waiting for it to cook, I grab the poker and update the map with what I learned about the cavern and cave below the lake. After eating, I climb into my hammock and go to sleep.

After waking up and eating my leftover soup for breakfast, I do some stretching and make sure everything is working and moving correctly. I decide to try one or two experiments before heading to the cave. So I grab one of the enchanted pikes and move to sit in my practice area.

I enter the inner world and take a look at the pike, I can see the mana woven into it, but it's nowhere near as complex as the blindness spell was.

I leave the inner world and reach for the Armatite rod, which is already about half gilded, and then return to the inner world. I carefully untangle the mana thread inside the pike, trying to channel the mana into the Armatite at the same time so as not to overload myself. Doing both at the same time makes the process much slower, but I think I'll get better with practice.

I am able to completely remove and absorb the mana thread from the pike without any explosion.

⟨⟨-DING-⟩⟩.

- Congratulations, the Disenchant skill has advanced to level 3!

√ Disenchanting.

√ Level 3.

- Intelligence +6 Physical +6 Mana +6 +30

- You can remove an enchantment and recover 15% of your mana.

When I open my eyes I see that the wooden handle of the pike is intact, but the metal head is gone. I also notice that the gold on the Armatite bar has grown noticeably. This will work, I have tons of stuff I can disenchant to get mana. However, it takes quite some time, so I should move all the enchanted stuff to the forge room and disenchant it there later.

As I get up to do just that, I see a pile of grayish dust. When I look closer, I realize that the steel pike didn't disappear, it just broke. I pick up the dust to take it with me and start moving everything to the forge room. It takes me quite a few trips to move all the weapons and armor and stack them neatly.

I'll wait until later to start disenchanting them. First I want to finish exploring the cave under the lake. So I head back to camp and, as I enter the cavern, I hear a loud roar echoing in the direction of the camp.
