Chapter 38: A Magical Reality
Qiu Tu felt a massive shock to his worldview. Everything that had happened since his transmigration seemed to be overturned by Qin Shuman’s story. Quickly running through the truth she shared, he realized it surprisingly made sense.
He was a bit dazed. It all seemed too magical.
What exactly had happened that day? Why had not only he transmigrated, but Qin Shuman also ended up trapped in this body?
As Qiu Tu pondered this, Qin Shuman spoke up.
With a mysterious and teasing smile, she touched her red lips to the rim of her glass and asked, “Qiu Tu, I’ve told you everything about myself. Isn’t it time you were honest with me about your own background?”
Resting her chin on her hand, she looked at Qiu Tu playfully, “Who exactly are you? And why are you trapped in this body like me?”
Qiu Tu, initially thinking to lie, paused when he saw her eyes.
What kind of eyes were those?
They were filled with confusion, melancholy, and wandering thoughts, with a hint of hidden expectation. In that moment, Qiu Tu seemed to understand this beautiful woman before him:
A once-proud girl from the shelter, suddenly trapped in a clone body with only two years to live, and facing constant danger.
Not knowing if she could return to her original body, unsure of this body’s fate, and whether her soul would dissipate with it—she must be utterly desperate.
Then, in such despair, she discovered someone else with the same experience beside her.
That moment must have given her a sense of solidity.
Like a lonely soul meeting another lonely soul.
Thus, she depended on him so much. Because perhaps he was the last glimmer of light in her life.
With this in mind, Qiu Tu took a deep breath and softly said, “My situation might be even more complicated than yours.”
“I entered this body after the previous soul died too.”
“But I’m not from New Realm, and I don’t even know where New Realm City is.”
“I also don’t know why I entered this body.”
“If it weren’t for discovering his memories after entering, I wouldn’t have been able to pretend.”
Hearing Qiu Tu’s words, Qin Shuman swirled her wine glass, a bright smile spreading across her face, “I knew it. We are the same kind.”
She raised her glass to him in a toast.
Qiu Tu smiled and clinked his glass with hers.
“Clink!” The clear sound rang out.
They looked into each other’s eyes and drank their wine in one go.
At that moment, they both felt much closer to each other.
After a few more drinks, Qiu Tu, in a tipsy state, asked what he was most curious about, “Have you thought about returning to your original body?”
Qin Shuman lightly caressed the rim of her glass, her gaze misty, her breath like orchids, “Of course I have.”
“I’ve tried every method I could think of in the past few days, but all have failed.”
“Otherwise, I wouldn’t be so despondent.”
Qiu Tu sighed slightly and asked, “Have you thought about asking the military or the Security Division for help?”
Qin Shuman shook her head lightly, “I know the abilities of the few Cataclysm Awakened in the Security Division, but they can’t help me.”
Her eyes reflected her exhaustion, “As for the military, they won’t help me.”
Qiu Tu was curious, “Why not?”
Qin Shuman looked deeply at him, “Did you forget my current identity?”
Qiu Tu was initially stunned, then realized he had asked a foolish question:
Qin Shuman’s predecessor was Yan Chen’s mistress. Was Qin Shuman really investigating the Qin family, as Lin Zuo suggested?
How could that be!
If the investigation were legitimate, why not choose another entry point? The Qin family was vast, with many points of entry better than a clone woman constantly by Yan Chen’s side.
So, Qin Shuman chose to possess Yan Chen’s mistress to investigate Yan Chen.
But who was Yan Chen? The highest official in New Realm City’s Investigation Department, one of the city’s three major leaders alongside General Ye from the military!
If the Security Division secretly investigated such a high-profile figure, it would be fine if nothing happened. But once something did, both General Ye and the Security Division’s leaders would immediately distance themselves, deeming it “Qin Shuman’s personal action.”
No one would risk departmental conflicts over a mere department chief.
Nor would anyone secretly take Qin Shuman for treatment: her predecessor was Yan Chen’s mistress. Who would dare hide her from him?
Thus, Qin Shuman was utterly desperate.
No matter which way she turned, she found herself trapped.
Reflecting on this, Qiu Tu fell silent.
After a moment of quiet thought, he said, “So, to be accepted back by the military and treated, you need to bring down Yan Chen?”
Qin Shuman spread her hands, “There’s only a slight chance. After all, no one knows how to restore our condition.”
“Maybe it will naturally recover over time?”
“Maybe it requires the ability of a specific Cataclysm Awakened?”
“Maybe it needs a rare Cataclysm artifact?”
“Or maybe it will never be restored in this lifetime.”
Her eyes darkened, “And even if a method to restore me exists, this body’s lifespan is too short. I might not live long enough to find it.”
Perhaps influenced by her mood, Qiu Tu sighed deeply after hearing her words.
He comforted her, “Thinking too much is pointless. We’re already walking a tightrope. For all we know, Yan Chen might kill us before this body’s lifespan ends.”
Qin Shuman laughed, slightly tipsy. She raised her glass, “Exactly. So, I’ve decided to enjoy the moment!”
“Enjoy the moment~”
Watching the maid help the pitiful woman into the bedroom, Qiu Tu’s gaze grew complicated. Then he turned and left the mansion.
Perhaps due to their similar experiences, Qiu Tu felt much sympathy for Qin Shuman.
He thought that if he had the chance, he should help her.
After all, she was a Security Division department chief. If she could be won over, she could accomplish much.
