_______________

The noxious fumes of this sleeping gas stung my nostrils like a thousand angry bees. Thanks to tenacity It didn't have much of an effect on me so I opened the door to let out the sleeping gas hoping that the people affected could wake up quicker.

WEEWOO, WEEWOO, WEEWOO,

The wail of approaching sirens shattered the tense silence and I just sat down looking at the thieves knocked out cold after I beat them to a pulp.

Peering through the doorway, I saw a swarm of blue and red lights pulsing towards me. It was the police and Heroes, thank goodness.

A collective gasp filled the room as the pungent odour hit them. I watched, nose wrinkled, as they fumbled for handkerchiefs or covered their faces with sleeves.

Even the stoic police chief, a woman with steely eyes and a jaw permanently set, winced as she pulled out a mask.

While I crouched beside the door I removed the gas masks from the faces of the three thieves revealing their faces. One by one, the masks landed beside me as I looked at the three idiots.

"Hold it right there!" A barked command snapped me to attention. A young officer, eyes wide and gun drawn, pointed it at me. "What are you doing?"

I straightened, meeting his gaze with composure. "Officer, I'm the one who called you. These individuals used sleeping gas and I subdued them before they could harm anyone."

He didn't lower his weapon, but his eyes flickered to the masks at my feet. "And those?"

"Evidence," I explained, my voice calm even under the scrutiny. "They belong to the perpetrators."

Then out of nowhere a man in a brown coat and a black suit appeared. It was clear to see who he was and I wouldn't ever be mistaken by the appearance of his ugly-shaped hat.

[Vice leader Of the Visionary Syndicate (Guild Rank: 2 Globally) Dempsy Anette]

He was one of the greatest detectives and if not the greatest detective of all time. His ability 'Decipher' was able to pick up specks of information from a crime scene and generate an almost near infinite amount of possible scenarios which shows what could've and would've happened.

I made this character the best version of what Sherlock could've been and judging from his confident aura he gestured for the officer to stand down as his gaze swept over me.

He looked at my clothes (slight blood stains), my demeanor, and the masks on the floor. His right eye which held the ability to decipher glow a bright violet as it analyzed my clothing.

A few seconds after he had a flicker of understanding in his eyes.

"Alright," he said, his voice gruff but not unkind. "Tell me what happened here."

He acted to me like he didn't know what happened but he's a man of reassurance so he knows that the possible 'scenario' he saw matched with what he saw in his ideal possibility.

As I recounted the events, the heroes and police were around, murmuring amongst themselves.

They had checked the camera footage to see what had happened but there was someone skilled enough to disable them for a short period and the footage they had saw was Rel sitting down after beating down the criminals.

"Intriguing," he finally said. "The lack of footage is... concerning, to say the least."

The scene unfolded, questions answered, and statements were taken. The heroes eventually dispersed, leaving the police to process the scene and the criminals.

As they loaded the unconscious figures into a waiting van, Dempsy stayed behind.

"I haven't made a habit of doubting those who call me," he stated, his voice surprisingly gentle. "But as you said, evidence matters. That's where I come in."

He held out his ID, the name 'Dempsy Anette' embossed in gold. "Detective Anette," he introduced himself with a nod. "And let's just say, I excel at finding what's hidden."

Yes, I know that already dumbass. So I just smiled.

"Oh, I forgot to ask," he said, his voice laced with curiosity. "Were you the mercenary hired from Jaxon's Corps?"

Jaxon's Corps? Did he seriously think I was from his mercenaries corps? Well, the theme of having all black did match the attire of my robe but I only used it to cover my school clothing. "No. I'm not a part of any type of organization."

As Dempsy stroked his chin confused by my answer he looked at me from up and down again thinking of what to say. "Really? That was unexpected... But judging from what you look like you're an academy student right?"

A prickle of unease crawled up my spine. Perhaps my disguise wasn't as seamless as I'd hoped. Well it was expected he figured me out sooner but I didn't think it would be this fast.

"Could you take off your mask and show me who you are?" A blatant answer indeed but I like to keep my identity a secret to all those guild informants especially him.

"um... I think it's best If I just keep the mask on" I said nodding like he was gonna forcefully rip it off my face.

Dempsy shrugged a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Suit yourself, kid. But trust me, your secret won't stay hidden forever, especially considering… well, let's just say you're a first year attending the same academy as my nephew." He climbed into the waiting limousine, muttering something about him saying he'll figure me out under his breath.

As the car pulled away, a deep, gravelly voice sent shivers down my spine.

"Hey." I turned my head around slowly, my heart hammering against my ribs. A towering figure clad in black and a mask that he breathed out of, the unmistakable emblem of the Mercs Corp shining on his chest.

[Jaxon Cain Leader Of The Mercenary Coorperation]

It was Jaxon Cain in the flesh someone who I didn't want to meet and would never want to see...

Though his broad shoulders are relaxed, his gaze is steady but devoid of hostility. He seemed too calm, "You seem troubled," he remarked, his voice surprisingly smooth, almost… gentle.

I swallowed hard, unsure how to respond. This wasn't the intimidating mercenary I'd envisioned.

But before I could fully think of what to say, Jaxon's voice cut through the silence. "You aren't from my ward are you?" He asked changing his calm look to a more intimidating expression, "My men were hired to guard this building today, and three of them seemed to be completely absent."

Jaxon's gaze sharpened, "Did you happen to see… a swordsman, an archer, and a bruiser? Anything at all?"

My mind raced. Were the missing mercenaries the ones I'd fought earlier? Wait but that's impossible because the two had swords and the other had a gun for a weapon so I answered his question without hesitation "No, sir. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary."

Jaxon didn't seem entirely convinced, but he grunted in dismissal. "Keep your eyes peeled, then. If you see anything unusual, anything at all, report it immediately."

"Were you watching that fight the entire time?" I asked, curiosity and suspicion mixing in my voice.

The pressure intensified as he turned around to look at me. "Yes. You are certainly different from what I had expected," he admitted, avoiding specifics. "You may not look like one of my men, but you possess a certain... resourcefulness." He said.

My stomach felt beyond uncomfortable from hearing those words.

Jaxon's gaze held mine, unreadable. "Perhaps not," he conceded. "But the world, for a kid like you, isn't black and white and if you ever think of becoming a mercenary then go to this address."

He took a step back, extending a hand with a silver business card...

I was stunned and confused by the sudden offer.

Could this day get any weirder?

With a curt nod, Jaxon disappeared in the blink of an eye, leaving me alone with the business card in my hand.

[Monday, 6:30 AM]

[Pinnacle Academy 1st Year Male Dorm Rooms]

[Before the start of the Scouting Invitational Tournament]

RUMBLE, RUMBLE, RUMBLE

Tremors rattled my sleepy brain. Groaning, I burrowed deeper into my pillow, desperately clinging to the last ounce of sleep that I had.

But It was useless... The sounds of grunts, thumps, and clangs emanating from every direction were relentless.

I know today's first-year dorm students were preparing for the upcoming Scouting Invitational Tournament with the enthusiasm of a rampaging herd of elephants.

Peeking out from under the covers, I squinted at the clock. 6:30 AM. Was it really necessary to start this pre-tournament ritual at the crack of dawn? Did they think the judges awarded points for early morning noise pollution?

I just wanted a sound sleep in my new comfy pajamas...
