Chapter 36 – The Ending of Kaka (1)
What Liu Kaiyan asked was, “It was pitiful, right?”
What Su Tian heard was, “[He] was pitiful, right?”
[He] was the main character of the comic, the dog at the circus, but it was also Liu Kaiyan, who was being forced to train under his parents’ whip.
Perhaps, because his skin was so pale, Boss Liu had a pair of especially dark eyes. When he looked at someone, his look was always intense mixed with a little bit of coldness. It always gave the impression that one would be sucked into his eyes.
Su Tian studied him for a bit and instead of answering his question, replied with a question, “Why do you say that it was pitiful?”
“Every time it tried to escape it was caught and dragged back. And every time it was dragged back, it received a severe beating. Why couldn’t it just resort to staying at the circus? After all, it was well fed there and it had a roof over its head... why did it keep trying to escape. Isn’t that stupid and pitiful?”
Just like himself.
Su Tian shook her head, “No, I don’t agree that he was pitiful.”
Su Tian omitted the “stupid” part. She knew that his point wasn’t the “stupid” part, but the “pitiful” part.
“I felt that Kaka was great. It was brave and respectable.....”
Su Tian always has a calm demeanor and a slight smile on her when she talked. She’d always looked at the person she was talking to. Her look was always so tender that it was as though one was being caressed by a soft pair of small hands.
No matter who she was talking to, they’d always quiet down and listen to her, and believed that each and every single word coming from her was from the bottom of her heart, with no fakeness.
Liu Kaiyan, just like anyone else, felt the same way.
She said, “.... I am so proud of him.”
Hearing her final word was like a bomb being dropped inside of Liu Kaiyan. All the grievance and injustice that had been eating at him since he could remember were wiped clean. So, Kaka was... respectable?
So he wasn’t.... pitiful after all?
He couldn’t say anything for a little while. He turned away a little awkwardly, worried that Su Tian would notice his emotional fluctuations.
Luckily, Su Tian suddenly remembered something and was flipping through his notebook again, “Was there an ending? Kaka must have escaped at the end, right?”
No, Kaka died.
But, Liu Kaiyan decided against telling her the truth and, instead, nodded and went along with her thought, “Yes, it escaped.”
Su Tian smiled, “Then why did you rip the ending out?”
Liu Kaiyan looked down and said, “I wasn’t happy with the drawing...”
“Can I finish it for you?” Su Tian suggested, suddenly invigorated. When she looked at Liu Kaiyan, her eyes sparkled.
When he recollected his thoughts, he had already nodded.
But, he didn’t have a pen with him. Before Liu Kaiyan could suggest to go back to the classroom to retrieve one, Su Tian had already looked around the area and walked over to a couple girls sitting with their backs to each other, studying with their pencil cases next to them.
He saw her walking over to them as she smiled and said something to one of the girls before that girl opened up her pencil case and let her have her pick. Su Tian took a ballpoint pen from the case.
With a smile on her, she walked back to Liu Kaiyan as she gloated to him, “What can I say? Everybody just loves me.”
Liu Kaiyan couldn’t help but chuckle. Su Tian had always been mild and mature, it was rare when she showed her lively girly side.
The golden red rays of sunset spread on her face and exuded warm, purity, and tenderness...
“I am not as good at drawing as you are. Don’t tease me, okay?” Su Tian set his expectations low.
Liu Kaiyan, “Okay, I won’t.”
Su Tian felt more relieved after his promise. She chewed on her nail for a second while pondering before she started drawing.
