Chapter 149: Gears of Fate (4)
Chapter 149: Gears of Fate (4)
Jason idled around town for the next few days and watched Sarah's crew conduct tests on the fully enhanced Murk Walker. It seemed like the whole of Murk Point was excited to see these changes in action, as the inhabitants regularly went to watch as well. Excited talks made the town feel more alive than it did a few days ago.
Jason smiled as he watched as he waited for Zach's group to finish loading up the caravan. It was finally time to leave this place and make his way home. Personally, he was looking forward to it. He was looking forward to just spending his time inventing new things for a while. Hopefully, with none of the drama that had been invading his life since his birthday.
Archive sat on an open floor of a shack and watched Jason with a curious expression. It seemed like the spark for future events was about to happen, but what spark would it be? Archive's eyes turned cloudy as she turned her attention to every area that was connected to Jason...
Highrise...
"Listen here you! That's my grandson you're talking about!" Harry's face turned beet red as his finger pointed in the face of a man trembled. "Jason had absolutely nothing to do with that murder! How could you even think that!"
"Harry, calm down... The man's just trying to do his job..." Raymond's voice sounded like he was trying to be calming, but he was glaring at the stranger with unconcealed hostility.
"It's as your friend here says, Mr Wright. I'm just trying to do my job. Did you know that your grandson was registered as out of town at the time of the incident? Yet he went alone, rather strange for someone so young, no? The guards on duty at the time remember him leaving with a rather large bag of junk..." The stranger cocked an eyebrow as he waited for the words his rugged voice carried to sink in.
"What's so strange about that?" Harry huffed as he crossed his arms and glared at the man.
"Now, who would take junk OUT of town, I wonder? His store is right here, he needs to bring materials HERE. So why leave town with them?" The man shrugged his shoulders as he shook his head. "It makes no sense... unless... that junk was what was needed to create illegal weaponry that he did not want to be traced back to himself. Now, I'm not saying he did it, but it's likely that he created the weapon."

Harry's body trembled with rage as his tail swooshed through the air behind him. This stranger was going too far! If Jason was held accountable for this murder, then the store would be closed down! How would he make credits then? 'That idiot better not have anything to do with this or he'll get a solid piece of my mind when he comes back!'
"Listen, Mr Wright... All you need to do is tell me if there's anywhere outside of town that you two use without worrying about other people..." The bounty hunter grinned as if he were doing them a favour.
"And why would you need to know that?" Harry growled as he felt a knot twisting in his stomach.
"Well, most first time killers are stupid enough to keep the evidence. Either out of pride or not wanting to waste whatever they used... It's only when they become seasoned killers that they realise how stupid it is." The man grinned as he stroked his black beard, which was peppered with grey.
"Hmph! Well, there's nothing of the sort! Besides, why would we even need somewhere out of town? This place is plenty secure!" Harry growled as he shooed the man out of the store.
"Well, if you change your mind, Mr Wright, be sure to let me know..." The bounty hunter laughed as he walked away to join his group of companions.
"So... Did you get anything from the old man?" A woman with short spikey brown hair asked as she cocked an eyebrow.
"Oh... Nothing much, but if my hunch is right, this old man will lead us to what we need..." The man chuckled as cast his gaze at everyone. "Just to be clear... If he gets in the way... Kill him..."
As the rest of the group laughed at this statement, the vision that Archive was seeing changed...
"I'm telling you Adam! It's not right that we can't see Jason! Tell me I'm wrong! Don't you think some of the stuff that Ouroborous is using just wreaks of Jason? If he's making stuff like that then he can at least upgrade my gear as an apology!" Dani screamed at the young man tagging along behind her.
"You heard what the Captain said, Dani... Jason is currently busy with extremely important research and is in no position to be intruded upon by soldiers of our standing!" Adam sighed as he followed her through the hallways.
"We only just got here not long ago, Adam! How important can Jason really be! I'm going to get to the bottom of this. I heard some folks talking about Ouroboros's quarters being over in the building on the east side. Let's go ask him where Jason is!" Dani was beyond furious. She felt like things were just not adding up when it came to Jason recently. Although she was angry, she was mainly worried that he had gotten himself caught up in something that he could not handle.
Archive's vision changed again...
This time, she was shown an area deep in the black liquid. Something was moving in its depths. But she could not see it clearly. She could only sense that whatever it was happened to be ancient. But the recent disturbance of the fast-moving Murk Walker had made it take notice of its surroundings.
Her vision broke. Before reforming to show another scene...
Almost fifty people were gathered together not far from Murk Point. The leader of this group removed the shabby travelling cloak to reveal the armour of the Alliance. When he did that, the rest did the same. A shiver ran down Archive's spine as she watched what they were up to. They seemed to be discussing something, but for some reason, something was interfering with her vision.
All she could see for sure was that they looked determined. As they cheered and began to spread out in smaller groups. Despite not being able to hear them she could hazard a guess as to what they were planning. 'I can't allow for that to happen. That will lead to one of the worst scenarios...' Archive hummed as she cut off her Power. Returning to the present.
She hummed as she watched the caravan prepare to set off. 'Looks like I may need to interfere a little...' A plan presented itself in her mind. She could only hope it would be enough to steer things along the path that she thought was best. She turned her head to the two men behind her.
"I have a job for you two..." Archive's voice was solemn as she got up to lead them out of the shack.
Meanwhile, Jason was looking over his own plans in his head while gazing towards the foul black liquid from time to time. The shiny new Murk Walker was being put through its paces once again. Jason could only sigh as the sight made him yearn for his own vehicle. Well, a bigger one than what he was currently using.
There was an open design in his mind as he gave Syssie instructions on things to change. There was something he wanted to try out, but was unsure if it would work. Something in his mind was telling him he could come up with a design for something, and his current skills would do their best to make it work. He had no idea where this thought had come from, but it was an intriguing idea.
'At least we have plenty of time to work on it. It'll still take tons of time to return to Highrise according to Zach. I just hope my current skills can really give me a working version. If it does... Then this will open up a whole load of new ways to my ideas to life!' Jason thought ecstatically as Zach's voice rang out from somewhere near the front waggon.
"Alright folks! Buckle up! We've got a long journey ahead! So no slacking! Yes, Ben! I'm looking at you! Let's move out!" Zach shouted in a rather chipper voice as he turned to face the front and the waggon began to move...
