The Demon Queen's Contract

Chapter 87: I’m fine

The figure stood in the doorway, casting a long shadow across the hall. For a moment, time seemed to stand still. Then, with a swift movement, the figure threw back their cloak, revealing a dark, armored suit and a menacing mask that covered their face.

"Who are you?" Seraphina demanded, stepping forward protectively. Her hand was already on the hilt of her sword, eyes narrowing in suspicion.

The masked intruder didn't respond with words. Instead, they launched themselves at Seraphina with startling speed. Seraphina met the attack head-on, her sword clashing against the intruder's blade with a sharp ring that echoed through the hall.

"Get back, Elara!" Seraphina shouted as she parried a series of rapid strikes. The force of the blows pushed her back, but she stood firm, determination etched into her features.

I scrambled to find something to defend myself with. My heart pounded in my chest as I grabbed a heavy candlestick from a nearby table. It wasn't much, but it would have to do.

Seraphina and the intruder moved with deadly precision, their swords dancing in a blur of metal and sparks. The clash of their blades was almost musical, a dangerous symphony that filled the hall. Despite the intensity of the fight, Seraphina's movements were controlled and calculated, each strike and parry demonstrating her skill and training.

Just as I thought Seraphina was gaining the upper hand, more figures appeared at the door. Hooded and cloaked, they poured into the hall, surrounding us. There were at least five more, each one brandishing a weapon.

Seraphina glanced at me, her expression torn between fury and concern. "Stay close to me, Elara!"

The new attackers didn't wait. They charged us with a ferocity that took my breath away. Seraphina moved to intercept them, her sword a blur as she fought to keep them at bay. Despite her skill, the odds were quickly becoming overwhelming.

I swung the candlestick at an approaching attacker, hitting them squarely in the side. They stumbled but quickly recovered, turning their attention to me. I backed away, my heart pounding.

"Seraphina!" I shouted, but she was already engaged with two other attackers, her focus split as she tried to protect both of us.

The intruder who had stumbled lunged at me again. I barely managed to dodge, swinging the candlestick wildly. My foot caught on the edge of a rug, and I fell backward, the heavy candlestick slipping from my grasp and clattering across the floor. The attacker loomed over me, raising their weapon.

Before they could strike, Seraphina was there. With a fierce cry, she drove her sword into the attacker, who crumpled to the ground. She pulled me to my feet, her grip strong and reassuring.

"We need to find a way out," she said urgently, her eyes scanning the room. "There are too many of them."

Another attacker lunged at her, and she deflected their blade with a quick movement. "Go!" she shouted, pushing me toward a side door. "I'll cover you!"

I hesitated, fear and worry knotting in my stomach. But I knew she was right. I couldn't be a liability. I ran toward the door, glancing back to see Seraphina fighting off multiple attackers at once. Her movements were a blur of grace and power, but even she couldn't keep this up forever.

As I reached the door, another attacker blocked my path. Desperation gave me strength, and I slammed into them with all my weight. They stumbled, and I darted past, throwing the door open and racing down the corridor.

The sound of the fight grew fainter as I ran, my breath coming in ragged gasps. I needed to find help, someone who could turn the tide. The castle's layout was a confusing maze, but I kept moving, hoping to find guards or allies.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps behind me. I turned to see one of the attackers, their hood thrown back to reveal a cruel smile. Panic surged through me, and I looked around for a weapon or a place to hide.

I spotted a decorative suit of armor standing against the wall, its ornate sword sheathed at its side. I grabbed the sword, pulling it free with some difficulty. It was heavier than I expected, but I held it out in front of me, trying to steady my shaking hands.

The attacker slowed, eyeing the sword with a mixture of amusement and caution. "You think you can fight me with that?" they sneered.

I didn't respond. Instead, I took a step back, positioning myself so the attacker would have to come through the narrow space between the armor and the wall. They moved forward, and I swung the sword with all my strength.

The blade connected, catching the attacker off guard. They stumbled, clutching their side. I took the opportunity to run again, my heart pounding even harder. I could hear their footsteps behind me, but I didn't dare look back.

I burst into another hallway, nearly colliding with a group of guards. "Help!" I shouted, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "They're attacking Seraphina!"

The guards immediately drew their weapons and followed me back toward the hall. As we approached, I could hear the sounds of the fight growing louder again. We burst through the door to find Seraphina still fighting, though she was clearly tiring.

The guards charged into the fray, their presence a welcome reinforcement. They engaged the attackers, giving Seraphina a moment to catch her breath. She looked at me, relief and gratitude in her eyes.

"Thank you," she said, her voice hoarse from exertion.

I nodded, my heart still racing. "We need to end this, now."

With the guards' help, the tide of the battle began to turn. The attackers were skilled, but they were outnumbered now. One by one, they were subdued, disarmed, or driven back. The initial intruder, the one in the dark armor, was the last to fall. Seraphina faced them, her sword at the ready.

"Who sent you?" she demanded, her voice cold and commanding.

The masked figure didn't answer. Instead, they lunged at her with a final, desperate attack. Seraphina parried, their swords locking together for a tense moment. Then, with a swift movement, she disarmed them, sending their sword clattering across the floor.

The attacker fell to their knees, breathing heavily. "You'll never stop us," they spat, their voice filled with venom.

Seraphina stepped back, her sword still pointed at them. "Who sent you?" she repeated.

The attacker laughed bitterly. "You'll find out soon enough."

Before Seraphina could respond, one of the guards moved forward and restrained the attacker. The rest of the attackers were either unconscious or restrained, the fight finally over.

I sank to the floor, my legs trembling from adrenaline and exhaustion. Seraphina sheathed her sword and came over to me, her expression softening.

"Are you alright?" she asked, kneeling beside me.

I nodded, still trying to catch my breath. "I think so. What about you?"

"I'm fine," she said, though I could see the fatigue in her eyes. "We did it."

The guards began to clear the room, dragging the attackers away. Seraphina helped me to my feet, and we stood together, surveying the aftermath of the battle. It had been a close call, but we had prevailed.

As we made our way out of the hall, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. The attackers' words echoed in my mind, a chilling reminder that our fight was far from over. But with Seraphina by my side, I knew we could face whatever came next.

We had won this battle, but the war was still ahead. And we would face it together.

Seraphina and I walked out of the hall, leaning on each other for support. The corridors of the castle seemed longer than usual, each step a reminder of the intensity of the battle we had just fought. The adrenaline was slowly wearing off, leaving behind a heavy exhaustion.

"Do you think they'll come back?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Seraphina squeezed my hand reassuringly. "We'll be ready if they do. But right now, we need to regroup and rest."

We reached our room, and as the door closed behind us, the weight of everything that had happened began to settle. I could see the concern in Seraphina's eyes, but there was also a fierce determination. She would protect me, no matter what.

"Thank you for saving me," I said softly, looking up at her.

She brushed a strand of hair from my face, her touch gentle and comforting. "I will always protect you, Elara. Always."

We stood there for a moment, just holding each other, finding solace in our shared strength. The world outside could wait for now. Here, in this quiet room, it was just the two of us.

"Let's not think about what comes next," Seraphina murmured. "Let's just be here, together."

I nodded, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. Seraphina leaned in, her lips soft and warm against mine. The kiss was gentle at first, a promise of safety and love. It deepened, a shared connection that spoke of our resilience and our bond.

In that kiss, I found the strength I needed. No matter what challenges lay ahead, I knew we would face them together. And that was enough.
