Chapter 72: Flamethrower (4)
Chapter 72: Flamethrower (4)
Luke quickly found some plastic bags and used them to cover the radio transmitter alongside his shield. Once he was confident that everything was fine, he resumed his fight against the zombies. At first, Luke had a hard time because of the heavy rain and the visibility, but that also affected his opponents. In fact, the zombies were only turning around to face him when he was five meters away from them. Thanks to that, Luke finished many of them with the crossbow with ease… the only downside was the fact that the rain quickly was draining the heat of his body…
“This isn’t going to let up any time soon… you should find shelter, Luke,” Rina said.
“That will only make me waste even more time… since it isn’t going to let up, I might as well get used to it and keep working,” Luke said.
Even though Luke didn’t stop, the rain made things a lot harder for him… so he had to work until midnight to kill just a few hundred zombies. That was the worst… Luke wasn’t exactly someone hardworking, but when he worked, he detested making things inefficient… Nevertheless, the shop opened again when he finished his work.

Passive skills were a bit hard to level up. After spending a day using Swordsmanship, Luke only learned that only to see it level up only once. So, spending all his coins with passive skills wouldn’t make things simpler for him in the future.
“I don’t know what to buy since I am fighting relatively well against the monsters, do you guys have any recommendations?” Luke asked.
“Why don’t you buy the most powerful weapon that you can with the gold coins?” Shalia asked.
“While I can buy a tier nine weapon, I am not sure if it is a good idea,” Luke replied. “Buying a super powerful one that doesn’t fit my level might make fights easier, but then I won’t gain much combat experience. I have to balance things, after all.”
“You are always good with weapons, the sword is the most balanced one and your skills and fighting styles are also balanced,” Rina said. “Just upgrade your defensive gear for the time being and buy the passive skills that will grant you elemental Resistances.”
It made sense, but Luke’s only item that he should change was his gloves. The boots weren’t that powerful, but their effects were useful, and his armor and helmet hadn’t suffered that much damage either. Luke felt that bis build was pretty focused on dodging, but not because he was good at it, but because he had skills like Stinger and Flying Kick. In fact, he was too clumsy to be called good at dodging.
Regardless, Luke bought a pair of steel gloves that granted him three more points of endurance for 1600 gold coins. While he could have bought something better, it was a risky investment since killing monsters can obtain items. Besides, Luke would only buy expensive things if they had useful effects, and Luke didn’t find them until now in the shop.
Congratulations! You have learned the skill Cold Resistance.
Congratulations! You have learned the skill Earth Resistance.
Luke bought those two for four thousand gold coins each, but then when he looked for Poison Resistance and Electric Resistance, he didn’t find anything. Either they didn’t exist, or they were too expensive for the current Luke. The second option was probably the most realistic… since the effects of those skills would be really something else.
Nevertheless, in the end, Luke still had four thousand more coins. Leaving them to the next day was an option, but he decided to do something expected: Luke bought two identical tiers six daggers. It wasn’t his style to dual-wield weapons and the ones with short-ranged fit him even less. Still, he bought them for their insane bonus in speed. It wasn’t small…

“I see… you want to use them in some specific situations in order to become faster,” Rina said. “Well thought.”
“That is right, using short weapons doesn’t feel that comfortable, but it will probably be fine if I become fast enough to surprise most enemies,” Luke said.
Luke was trying to cover all his bases to prevent unpleasant surprises and to have the means also to surprise the enemies with numerous cards up his sleeve. While that seemed like a lot of work, he also felt excited thinking about how he could surprise the enemies with his numerous tricks.
Thanks to one of his new passive skills while it wasn’t much, Luke began to feel a bit better against the cold. It seemed that it could level up even outside combat. Nevertheless, once he was done with the shop, Luke left Sebring behind and headed toward Orlando. Much to his surprise, he managed to reach the city when the sun was starting to rise. The few places he crossed along the way had some zombies, but not enough for them to block his path for more than a couple of minutes. Luke almost sighed in relief when he saw his destination… but then he saw many smoke curtains rising to the sky and a massive horde of zombies blocking the city’s southern entrance. It was time to work…
