Chapter 136: The Beast Tide [1]
Jin Wei and Chen Zin hurried through the bustling streets of Pearl City, while the city was in chaos, with people running in all directions, panicked by the sudden roar of the beast from the mountains.
The usually vibrant and bustling city was now frantic, with shopkeepers closing their stalls, children being ushered inside, and soldiers hastily donning their armor.
As the two women neared the city's main gate, they saw the guards and soldiers gathering in large numbers, each preparing for the oncoming beast tide.
Armor gleamed under the morning sun as soldiers tightened their belts and strapped weapons to their backs, preparing for the tide.
The cultivators in the Northern Bei kingdom also quickly came there for aid.
The Pearl city is one of the most important cities in the Northern Bei kingdom and if the beast tide crushes this, then the beasts will flood other cities after this.
So they have to stop the beast tide here no matter what it takes.
Jin Wei's sharp eyes scanned the scene before her, glancing at the hurried preparations of the soldiers.
She used her profound sense and she could feel the ground trembling a bit as she turned her gaze to the mountains.
Her eyes squinted looking at the scene—a massive horde of spirit beasts, numbering in the thousands, was rushing down the mountain slopes like an unstoppable wave.
Dust and debris kicked up in their path, darkening the skies as they charged toward the city.
Chen Zin turned her eyes to the woman beside her "Master..."
Taking a deep breath, Jin Wei spoke "There are a lot of spirit beasts..." as her voice trailed off, she looked around at the cultivators and guards gathered on the city front.
"It is a surprise that so many people quickly gathered at the sound of the beast. They must have been wary all the time having a city beside a dangerous mountain like this."
"However, I am sure... these levels of cultivators are not enough... because even though the beasts are weak, they outnumber us."
"And most of them all, I felt some powerful presences at the back..."
"At the far end, there seems to be a Venerable profound stage beast."
Hearing this, Chen Zin's eyes widened in shock "Venerable Profound Stage? Master... you are also in the 8th stage of the Venerable profound Stage... right?"
With a nod, Jen Wei replied, "Yeah... so, let's kill these beasts in the front."
...
Ming Yuelin jumped through the dense trees of the forest, her sharp eyes scanning the tide of spirit beasts that were descending the mountain.
'People must be in the City's gates to fend off the beasts, so I can kill some from here, which will reduce the burden there.'
"AWOOOO!!" The noise of growls and pounding hooves shook the earth.
*swish* With a quick motion, she leaped into the air, as she pulled her bowstring and a blazing arrow of Crimson Phoenix flames ignited.
*TWANG!*
The arrow flew... but missed the target by a wide margin, hitting a nearby tree instead.
"Eh?" Ming Yuelin blinked in confusion, scratching her head. "That wasn't supposed to happen..."
"Uhh, seems like I should do my training properly."
Suddenly, the growl of a spirit wolf reached her ears and Ming Yuelin turned around just in time to see it lunging at her, its teeth baring at her.
"Wahhh!" With a panicked yelp, she jumped to the side, barely dodging the attack as the wolf crashed into a bush.
"That was close!" she gasped, stumbling over a root as she tried to get her footing.
"Ah!"
Before she could recover, a large bird-like beast swooped down from above, aiming its claws at her.
"Aah! Not my beautiful face!" Ming Yuelin squealed, ducking at the last second.
The beast's claws grazed the top of her head, messing up her hair. "NO! The hairstyle master gave me after our bath! Hmph! Now I'm mad!"
She quickly pulled her bowstring again, creating another arrow, and this time, she aimed more carefully.
As she let go of the flaming arrow, it quickly stuck the spirit beast.
*WOOSH* The flames exploded upon impact, burning not only the beast but also several others that were caught in the blast, their anguish cries filling the air.
"Yes! I did it!" she cheered, pumping her fist in the air.
As more beasts surrounded her, Ming Yuelin quickly got back on her feet, dodging left and right with a series of awkward rolls and stumbles, each time narrowly escaping claws, talons, and fangs.
"Too close, too close, too close!" she muttered, her heart racing.
A low growl came from her left and without turning, she spun in midair, pulling the bowstring once more.
*swish* A streak of crimson fire ignited as she sent a barrage of flaming arrows toward a group of wolf-like beasts darting through the bushes.
Without a pause, Ming Yuelin landed on the forest floor and spun on her heel, dodging another pouncing wolf-like beast.
Its fangs gleamed in the sunlight, but she was too fast and with another pull of her bow, a powerful arrow hurled at the beast, instantly incinerating it. *thoom*
With another leap, she got into a sturdy branch in the tree and glanced down at the horde of beasts.
But there was no time to rest as more beasts surged from all sides.
Hm? Sensing a danger, Ming Yuelin leaped from the branch just as a bear-like creature swiped at her, its massive claws cutting through the air where she had stood.
In mid-air, she twisted her body, pulling her bowstring again, and shot her arrow right at its head.
Landing lightly on her feet, she sensed a shift in the air behind her and without even looking, she dove to the side just as a hulking beast with armored scales charged past, its momentum carrying it through a tree, splintering it into pieces. *THOOOM*
Ming Yuelin's reflexes were quick, and she was already pulling back her bow, the string humming with energy.
"Crimson Wind."
As she whispered, a spiraling arrow of flames shot forth, twisting like a serpent through the air.
*woosh* *thoom* It struck the armored beast's exposed underbelly, and with a resounding explosion, the beast was thrown off its feet, crashing into the trees with a fiery blast.
