Chapter 32: Expedition Starts II

The first floor of the dungeon proved to be inhabited by low-ranking monsters, creatures that would pose little threat to a well-prepared team of experts. Despite the temptation to press on quickly, Kael insisted on the value of every resource. "Every mana core counts," he reminded the team. "They'll be useful for our journey ahead."

Reluctantly at first, the group engaged each monster they encountered, swiftly dispatching them and harvesting their mana cores. Under Boran's guidance, the team operated efficiently, with their years of experience evident in their seamless coordination.

Boran assigned the crimson spider to map out the dungeon's layout, its eight eyes providing unparalleled insight into the best paths and hidden dangers. Thanks to its efforts, they secured a route that allowed for swift progress without unnecessary risks.

Now, the team stood before a large bronze gate, an imposing barrier that signified the entrance to the first dungeon boss room. Boran and Kael were at the forefront, the weight of leadership heavy on their shoulders. The group gathered behind them, anticipation and tension crackling in the air.

Boran turned to address the group, his voice carrying the authority of a seasoned warrior. "This is the first dungeon boss room. Since we're still at the early floors, I suggest we let the black orc handle it. We have a long way to go, and conserving our energy is crucial. Does anyone object?"

The group remained silent, their expressions resolute. No one objected. They knew the wisdom in Boran's suggestion, recognizing the importance of preserving their strength for the challenges ahead.

Boran raised his hand, revealing a small crystal ball embedded in his glove. With a command, the black orc moved to the front of the group. Originally stationed at the rear to secure their exit if necessary, the orc now stood ready for battle.

Boran retrieved a massive two-handed axe from his pack and threw it to the orc. The weapon flew through the air, but the black orc caught it effortlessly, his immense strength evident as he gripped the axe as if it weighed nothing.

Without a word, the black orc approached the bronze gate. He placed a large hand against the metal, the muscles in his arm tensing as he pushed the gate open with a slow, deliberate motion. The hinges creaked under the strain, and the group followed the orc into the cavernous room beyond.

The atmosphere inside was thick with a sense of foreboding. The chamber was vast, its walls adorned with ancient runes that glowed faintly in the dim light. At the center of the room lay their target: an undead wyvern, its decaying form a grotesque mockery of the majestic creature it once was.

Its eyes glowed with an unnatural light, and a shroud of dark energy surrounded it, pulsating with malevolent intent.

The black orc gripped his axe tightly, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the foe before him. He advanced slowly, each step deliberate and measured. The wyvern's head lifted, its eyes locking onto the orc, recognizing the challenge.

The tension in the room was palpable as the two formidable beings faced off. The orc moved first, his massive form a blur as he charged the wyvern, his axe swinging with deadly precision. The clash of metal against bone echoed through the chamber as the battle commenced.

The wyvern responded with a ferocious roar, lunging at the orc with its talons extended. The black orc sidestepped with surprising agility for his size, countering with a powerful strike that sent fragments of bone and decaying flesh flying. The wyvern staggered but quickly recovered, its tail whipping around in a deadly arc.

The orc anticipated the move, raising his axe to block the strike. The impact reverberated through his body, but he stood firm, pushing back with a force that sent the wyvern skidding across the stone floor. Seizing the moment, the orc launched himself forward, delivering a devastating blow to the creature's exposed ribcage.

Despite its undead state, the wyvern's instincts drove it to fight with a primal ferocity. It unleashed a blast of dark energy, but the orc was ready, raising his arm to shield himself. The runes on his collar glowed brightly, absorbing the brunt of the attack. With a roar of defiance, the orc surged forward, his axe cleaving through the wyvern's neck in a final, decisive strike.

The room fell silent as the wyvern's body crumpled to the ground, the dark energy dissipating into the air. The black orc stood over the fallen beast, his chest heaving with exertion but his expression triumphant. The team watched in awe, their respect for the orc's prowess growing.

Boran stepped forward, clapping a hand on the orc's shoulder. "Well done," he said simply, his voice filled with genuine admiration. The orc only nodded.

Kael approached, his eyes scanning the room for any remaining threats. Satisfied that the danger had passed, he turned to the group. "Let's gather what we can from the wyvern and continue. This victory is just the beginning."

As the team set to work, harvesting valuable materials from the fallen wyvern and preparing for the next leg of their journey, Kael couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. They had faced their first major challenge and emerged victorious.

Upon reaching the second floor, the team noticed a gradual increase in the difficulty of the monsters. The enemies became more cunning and resilient, requiring the group to adapt their strategies. Boran frequently consulted the crimson spider's maps, adjusting their route to avoid unnecessary conflicts and conserve their strength.

Days turned into weeks as they methodically cleared each floor, the routine of combat and resource collection becoming second nature. It wasn't until they stepped onto the fifteenth floor that they realized this dungeon was unlike any other they had encountered.

The moment they crossed the threshold, a palpable change in the atmosphere hit them. The monsters were noticeably stronger, their ranks higher than anything they had faced so far. The walls of the dungeon seemed to expand, and the space they now occupied was three times as vast as the earlier floors. The sheer scale of the environment was overwhelming.

"This isn't normal," Kael murmured, his eyes scanning the enormous chamber they had entered.

Boran nodded, his expression grave. "The monsters' ranks increasing with each floor is expected, but the dungeon's size growing like this is unusual. We need to proceed with extra caution."

Recognizing the enormity of the task ahead, Boran assigned two of the combat slaves to assist the crimson spider in mapping out the expansive area. The team advanced slowly, every step measured as they navigated the treacherous terrain. They encountered stronger monsters more frequently, each battle more intense than the last.

Despite the challenges, they remained focused on collecting mana cores, knowing these resources would be critical for their survival and success.

The sprawling corridors and cavernous rooms seemed to stretch on endlessly. Boran's decision to map the area thoroughly proved invaluable, as the combat slaves and the crimson spider provided crucial intelligence that prevented the team from becoming lost in the labyrinthine structure.

Kael felt a renewed sense of urgency. The dungeon's unpredictability meant they had to be prepared for anything. His leadership was tested continuously, but with each challenge, he felt himself growing stronger and more capable. The team's unity and resolve were their greatest assets, and Kael was determined to lead them through this daunting expedition, no matter what awaited them in the depths.
