Chapter 222: Acknowledgement of Strength
Chapter 222: Acknowledgement of Strength
The air was thick with the acrid scent of burning ozone, the ground still trembling from the magical explosion that had just torn through the Demon Lord's defenses. The night sky above the Broken Cliffs was painted with the fading remnants of the arcane blast, leaving behind a haze of smoke that swirled around the combatants like a ghostly shroud.
Vincent stood over Duchess Elinalese, his breathing steady but eyes locked onto the figure slowly rising from the smoldering crater. The Demon Lord, once so imposing and untouchable, was now battered, his once-gleaming armor marred by jagged cracks where the magic-infused missile had struck. Dark energy still crackled around him, but there was a noticeable dimming in its intensity.
Marcus's team maintained their positions, weapons trained on the demon. They were ready to unleash another volley of firepower if Vincent gave the order, but something in the air had changed. It was no longer the simple arrogance of a demon toying with its prey. There was something colder, more calculating in the way the Demon Lord now looked at Vincent.
For a moment, there was only the sound of the wind whipping through the cliffs, the faint hum of the Reaper drone circling above, waiting for the next command. Then, the Demon Lord's deep, rumbling voice broke the silence.
"You humans... you are not as simple as I once thought," he said, his voice carrying a note of grudging respect. He straightened, the glow in his crimson eyes flickering but not extinguished. "I see now why my generals fell to your kind. It wasn't luck... it was strategy."
Vincent didn't lower his rifle, but he narrowed his eyes, watching every movement the demon made. "You finally figured it out?" he asked, his tone cold. "Your arrogance blinded you, and now you pay the price."
The Demon Lord let out a low chuckle, dark and guttural. "Perhaps," he admitted, his gaze sweeping over the soldiers surrounding him. "My generals... they were too proud, too eager to prove their strength. They could not fathom that mere humans, with your fragile bodies, could be a true threat. They underestimated the reach of your weapons... and the potency of your... magic."
Marcus, still hidden behind cover, whispered into his comms, "Commander, is he stalling? What's his play here?"
"Stay sharp," Vincent replied quietly into his earpiece. "This isn't over yet."
The Demon Lord's eyes flickered upward to where the Reaper drone hovered, invisible to the naked eye but still sensed by the demon's arcane awareness. He growled low in his throat, frustration evident. "Weapons that strike from beyond my reach... magical enhancements that pierce even the strongest barriers. I had not anticipated this level of ingenuity from you humans."
Vincent's grip on his rifle tightened. "Is that why you're still standing here, talking? Realizing you've underestimated us again?"Nôv(el)B\\jnn
The Demon Lord's expression darkened, but he did not move to attack. Instead, he seemed to be considering Vincent's words, a rare moment of introspection for a creature born of darkness and war.
"No," he finally said, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "This was not a defeat, human. This was... a reconnaissance."
A flash of understanding crossed Vincent's eyes. "You lured us here," he said slowly, the realization settling in. "You wanted to see how we fight, to learn our strategies and the limits of our weapons."
The demon's grin widened, revealing rows of jagged teeth. "Indeed," he admitted. "I needed to know what allowed you to slaughter my forces. And now I understand. Your weapons, your tactics... your willingness to fight from the shadows rather than face your enemy head-on. It is... impressive."
The Demon Lord took a step back, his crimson eyes narrowing as he surveyed the battlefield one last time.
"But know this, Vincent Stryder," he said, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper. "I am not like my fallen generals. I learn from my mistakes. The next time we meet, you will not have the advantage of surprise. I will prepare for your magic-enhanced weapons, your cowardly attacks from the skies."
Vincent's heart pounded in his chest, but he kept his expression cold and unreadable. "You think you can just walk away?" he challenged, signaling Marcus and his team to prepare for another strike.
The Demon Lord's eyes gleamed with dark amusement. "I have what I came for, human," he said, his form beginning to waver as dark energy enveloped him. "And next time, it will be you who underestimates me."
Before Vincent could give the order to fire, the ground beneath the Demon Lord erupted in a swirl of black mist. The dark energy coalesced around him, forming a vortex that pulled him into its depths. In the blink of an eye, he was gone, leaving nothing but the faint stench of sulfur in his wake.
"Damn it," Vincent cursed under his breath, lowering his rifle. He turned to Marcus, who emerged from cover, his face set in a grim expression.
"He escaped," Marcus said, frustration evident in his tone. "We had him on the ropes, Commander."
Vincent nodded, his mind already working through what had just transpired. "No, Marcus," he said slowly, "this was never about defeating us today. He wanted intel. He was testing our
capabilities."
Duchess Elinalese, now free from her bonds, managed to rise shakily to her feet. "Commander... what now?" she asked weakly, her eyes filled with fear and exhaustion.
Vincent turned to her, his expression softening for a brief moment. "Now, we prepare," he said firmly. "The Demon Lord won't underestimate us again. We need to analyze everything that just happened here-every spell, every move. We'll be ready for him next time."
Marcus nodded, already reaching for his comms to relay orders. "Let's get the Duchess to safety and gather all our intel from this encounter. We need to be prepared for whatever he's planning next."
Vincent watched the skies where the Demon Lord had vanished. He knew that this victory was hollow. The real battle was only just beginning. The Demon Lord now understood their strength, their tactics, and their weapons. But Vincent also knew that knowledge was a double-edged sword.
The game had changed. And now, it was a race against time to prepare for the inevitable counterattack.
