Chapter 58: Experimentation
Chapter 58: Experimentation
Her father and mother left to deal with the aftermath of the robed murderers. Leena and Freya left soon after so that Astrid could rest up and recuperate her strength. After taking a long nap, Astrid had mostly recovered her strength, at least, the weariness within her arms had vanished.
She climbed out of bed and her bare, dainty feet touched against the cool, hard-wood floor. Astrid moved over to the shut window, and opened it. The ocean’s breeze tickled her nose, the smokey haze within the sky had mostly been stopped. Even from the Noble District, she could hear the shouting of the many Class users as they desperately repaired what had been destroyed. Just like with the Leviathan, it wouldn’t take long for the damage to be repaired back to what it used to be. The crops would continue to grow, using the ash as fertiliser. People would place the bricks back to the houses one-by-one. Just like that, just like always, Rebirth continued to survive for millenia.
It didn’t cross her mind before, but now that she had time to think, it was a good thing that the Spawn didn’t make use of Rebirth’s confusion to attack. Had most of them retreated alongside the Leviathan, crawling back to wherever it came from? Or were they waiting for a more opportune time to try another assault? A sense of danger that was always there resurfaced from Astrid’s heart. It felt like she was in a race against time with a dagger constantly at her back.
I guess everyone else feels the same… Astrid sighed, instead of thinking on what could happen, she turned her thoughts back to the fight at the auction. She was aware she had no right in being able to fight them, but thanks to her Overload ability, she was able to fight well above her level bracket. But, it couldn’t be controlled. What if she could? What if she could direct her emotions to different effects?
She shook her head at the thought, if there was someone who could do that it was most likely Freya. Astrid had no idea on how to control her emotions, or where to begin. The Overload skill wasn’t just useful in combat however, as the feeling of controlling her body through matter from the borrowed skill was still fresh in her mind. Just like how she controlled the matter within her body to levitate, she instead used it to strengthen her body to an extreme degree.
Astrid attempted to replicate it, but an intense pain throbbed within her veins. She immediately stopped in fear of blowing up her body. She wasn’t sure if her body still hadn’t fully recovered yet, her body simply couldn't handle it, or she lacked the level and control.
Would it be better to level up constitution for a less skilled method, or rely on higher intelligence to improve my matter control? Astrid pinched her chin in thought. Any more constitution, and it would be unnecessary, but then she would be gambling on whether or not she could replicate the skill with higher control. She finally decided to just increase her intelligence. The next milestone was five-hundred, and it was a big power boost.

Astrid looked at the messages the System had displayed for her. Levitation was almost maxed, depending on when her next mission was going to be, she wondered if she would be able to evolve it before heading back out to one of the Bubbled Towns. Hopefully stage 2 allowed her to alter her muscles with matter just like with Overload, although she doubted it would be at the level of her Overloaded state. Thinking about the Overload state, she remembered Lisa’s expression. It was a look of fear. Astrid recalled the long claw’s growing from her nails, but she didn’t know what the rest of her looked like. Judging from Lisa’s expression, it wasn’t anything good.
It seems like altering my muscles isn’t the only thing I can do with that skill. It seems frightening. I wonder if I can even change my face, or height? She asked herself the question, but she already knew the answer. If she could create metal from nothing, changing her appearance was only a matter of figuring out how to do it. Although the thought of using her own body as some sort of lab rat was somewhat concerning, if that’s what it took to grow stronger, then so be it.
Her attention diverted to her full stat page. The evidence of her hard work so far was put on display in front of her eyes.

She nodded at the long list of words. She still had two abilities to gain in her main class, and four for her secondary class. Astrid knew she couldn’t rush it, she knew how hard it was to gain abilities. System holders often have to go through life or death situations to gain them, unless one had a production class like a farmer, or fisher, where they could gain levels simply by working.
Hopefully it doesn’t take too long to obtain new Skills, so I can start levelling them– Astrid’s thoughts were interrupted by a gust of wind that tousled her hair. She gazed out the window, onto the dark ocean. Light shimmered on the water as the illumination from Rebirth lit up the surrounding area. Seafarer boats were busy patrolling the area. Now and then the sounds of cracking from harpoons filled the air, followed by monstrous screeching. It seemed like it was going to be a long night for everyone on HMS Rebirth, but for Astrid, it was bedtime.
Astrid leapt back into her bed and snuggled into the gorgeous fabrics of her duvet. She adored the cool sensation of the covers as they brushed up against her skin. She waved her arms along the fabric as if she was creating a snow angel. With a sigh, she forcefully stopped her fidgeting and attempted to get to sleep. Limbs still, eyes closed, breathing controlled. It didn’t work.
Astrid flailed her arms and legs then sat up, her mind was buzzing with everything that had happened.
Screw it, I’ll just do some training until I’m tired. Astrid began levitating the objects around the room in intricate movements. Some swooped while others twirled through the air. Then she moved on to creating illusions. She wanted to know what she could make, with it just being from her imagination, it was limitless. It took her a while to figure out different ways to use it, after all she was used to using blades, [Crash], or pulling out the eyeballs of her enemies.
After a while of sitting around and thinking, she created a human that would be the beginning of her scouting abilities. The woman stood there like a statue, Astrid tapped her foot on the wooden floor. It was basic, much like a beginner masonry sculpture. The clothes didn’t move, her eyes were lifeless and lacked intelligence. She wanted it to be as lifelike as possible so she took the extra time on the minute details. There was no way she would be able to do this on the battlefield, but if she learned how to do it now, it would be done faster in the future. Soon, the clothes began moving from every step, her hair bounced, and her eyes sparked with a hint of intelligence.
Astrid frowned, creating such minute details just from her imagination was a tough task, but she carried on. Next, she noticed there were no footsteps. She connected to the matter at her feet. Every time the woman took a step, Astrid would lightly thump the ground to create a footstep.
But this way is limited to the range of my Psychokinesis. Astrid pinched her chin in thought and ignored the throbbing pain from mana exertion. Well, it will do for now– Astrid opened her mouth wide and yawned. Her eyes grew heavy while she scratched at her bare stomach.
Bed time. Astrid scuttled toward the bed and fell into the soft covers for the second time. Her vision turned black as her dreamland embraced her. Although, it was far too real to just be a mere dream...
