Chapter 196: Can Be Planted
Chapter 196: Can Be Planted
Holding the package and her ID card, Yao Ran stepped aside to wait for Long Yu and the others. She looked around and saw a soldier standing nearby, so she approached him. Standing two meters away, she opened her package.
Inside was a kilogram of mixed rice, two potatoes with black skins, one frozen sweet potato with red skin, one frozen corn, and three compressed biscuits.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
She examined the sweet potato and corn closely. Seeing that they were frozen, Yao Ran knew they were ordinary.
The government may have opened reserved granaries and distributed food to citizens. If they can't find a way to produce food on a large scale, they might run out of food to distribute to their citizens soon.
After returning the frozen sweet potato and corn to the package, Yao Ran looked at the potatoes. Seeing their black skin, she thought they might be spoiled. However, when she pressed on them, they felt firm, though not frozen.
The nearby soldier, watching her curiously as she inspected the potatoes, took a few steps closer.
Yao Ran, unaware she had a spectator, continued focusing on the potatoes. When she peeled the black skin and saw a tiny sprout underneath, her eyes lit up.
She smiled and muttered, "So this potato can be replanted."
The soldier overheard her and asked, "Miss, did you just say that this potato can be replanted?"
Yao Ran was startled by the soldier's question. Because of Long Yu, she subconsciously trusted the soldiers and lowered her guard.
Seeing that he had startled her, the soldier felt guilty and said, "I'm sorry if I frightened you, Miss."
Yao Ran waved her hand and replied, "It's fine."
The soldier then asked, "Miss, are you sure that this potato can be replanted?"
Yao Ran nodded, showing the soldier the tiny sprout under the potato's black skin and explaining, "Here, look at this. This potato should be able to grow in this extreme cold weather because it can sprout."
Although she knew the government had been researching cold-resistant plants, that was confidential information. Yao Ran wasn't sure if the soldier was aware of it, so she didn't mention it.
The soldier took a closer look and saw the tiny sprout. His eyes widened in surprise, and he quickly asked, "Miss, could you give me this potato? I will give you another one in exchange."
Yao Ran looked at the soldier's sunken cheek for a second, then handed him the potato. She said, "Here, you can have it."
"Thank you, Miss." The soldier said, holding the potato like a treasure. "Please wait here while I get you another one."
Yao Ran nodded, watching as the soldier ran to one of the tents. She saw him talking with a man, pointing in her direction, and then handing over the potato. Soon, the soldier returned with three more potatoes.
He handed them to Yao Ran and said, "Miss, my supervisor said you can have these three potatoes."
Yao Ran accepted the potatoes without hesitation. While Long Yu and the others were still waiting in line, she inspected the three potatoes. As she examined them, the soldier watched curiously beside her.
After a few minutes, she handed one potato back to the soldier and said, "This one has a few sprouts. You can take it. I will keep these two."
The soldier was surprised by her action but accepted the potato. He saluted her and said, "Thank you for your contribution to our country, Miss."
Yao Ran nodded and packed the potatoes along with the other supplies. As she put everything into her backpack, she saw Long Yu approaching. Before leaving, she took out a bottle of diluted lake water from her bag and handed it to the soldier.
The soldier looked at the frozen water in the bottle and hesitantly asked, "This is...?"
"It's a nutrient solution I made myself. You can try it and see if it helps with the potato seedlings. Simply melt it before use." Yao Ran explained, then walked away.
The soldier watched as Yao Ran and the others left before quickly reporting to his supervisor with the frozen water and potato in his arm.
After leaving the neighborhood committee, Yao Ran said to her friends, "I checked the potatoes, sweet potatoes, and corn. Both the sweet potatoes and corn are frozen, so they can't be used as seedlings."
"But some of the potatoes have sprouts. We can try planting them later. For potatoes that have not yet sprouted, we can place them near the heater and wait until they sprout before
sowing."
Everyone was excited to hear this good news.
Ruan Ying held her husband's hand tightly and, with reddened eyes, asked, "Husband, can we really grow our own food?"
Sima Hao didn't know much about farming, but his parents had been farmers their whole lives. They would know what to do, so he nodded and said, "Yes. Let's do our best and work hard so we can feed Xiao Bao and our parents."
Listening to her husband's words, Ruan Ying smiled. Because of the cold weather, she didn't dare to cry and quickly blinked a few times to hold back her happy tears.
Yao Ran smiled when she saw the hope in her friends' eyes and said, "Let's head to the trading center and see if we can find planting pots, soil, and fertilizer."
Arriving at the trading center, they saw many people setting up simple stalls with cloth outside. Not many people went into the trading center, but a lot of negotiations were
happening outside.
Seeing this lively scene, Yao Ran couldn't wait to see what good things she would find today.
They walked from stall to stall but couldn't find any planting pots, soil, or fertilizer. Just when they were about to lose hope, someone called them.
"Brother Long, Miss Yao."
Hearing the familiar voice, Long Yu turned around and saw Yuan Rihui sitting there. He waved at Long Yu and asked, "Brother Long, how are you doing?"
