Chapter 21: The mage and the adventurer [part-1]
Chapter 21: The mage and the adventurer [part-1]
From the top of the wall, Sheila watched as the scared crowd dispersed. Cristian's aggressive move solved the situation.
Her brows raised as she gazed at the man, whose face currently lacked his usual smile. "They're here," a soldier called out to her.
Pulling out his blade, Cristian sheathed it while glaring at the Chief. He wanted to ensure the old man knew they were not on good terms.
The old man gulped. He lacked any definition of a leader and it made Cristian scowl. "Let's go."
"I need to get my staff." Anna rejected. He followed her gaze and sighted a church with a roughly made statue of an angel.
Cristian nodded and dashed forward. His boots made deep thuds that echoed in the deserted street. The sound of the lamps creaking as the wind blew slithered into his ears.
The chilling wind was like an oracle that had foretold of a bloody night. Cristian was baffled. The Dark Lord had not launched an attack on the town, he just threaten their borders.
So why now? What gave him the confidence that he could sweep through the town and still retain enough forces to defend against the opportunists?
"Hi,' Sheila shivered as his voice ran from behind. "There are other spots. Why are you here?" she queried in a distant tone.
The pink hue on her cheeks told Cristian she had not forgotten the kiss and tried to keep a distance between them.
"Hehe, you forgot we were supposed to be together. I remember someone saying we were going to be together... alone." He stressed out and watched Sheila bite her lower lips.
She met his mischievous gaze with flickering eyes and felt like slapping that cocky but handsome smirk away from his face.
"This is serious. We are to protect this town, not flirt." Facing the forest in the distance, her lovely voice rang in the air. Her solemn tone made Cristian chuckle.
"So you agree that we are flirting" his breath tickled her neck as he came dangerously close. It baffled the soldiers. They kept throwing glances at the duo.
Some felt furious. How could a hired adventurer woo their mage before their eyes? A brave few would have moved, but the moment they remembered Cristian's show of force, their bodies froze.
"We? Don't flatter yourself," Sheila scoffed. She could see his beautiful green hair and cocky smile, and it riled her up. Despite feeling like bashing him countless times, she maintained her demeanor in front of the soldiers.
"Hmm." Cristian hummed and distanced himself. A smile played on his lips and he stared at the distance.
Awoo! Awoo! Awoo!
Wolf's howls rang in a fear-inducing symphony, and even from the top of the walls, they felt a thunderous vibration.
"They're here" Sheila muttered. A strange diagram appeared in her eyes and the tattoos on her arms and thighs glowed, but no one could see it because of her clothes.
Cristian turned. He expected a good number of archers with their bows fully drawn. But there was nothing. In Fact, many of the soldiers lacked armor and weapons.
And this was leather armor he talked about. This small town could not afford iron armor. Even the lowest bronze-made armor was out of their reach.
He threw respect away and cast inspection on a soldier who stood with others at the gate.

Cristian's brows lowered 'No skill and equipment, that's a relief.' he said inwardly. If both weapons and equipment were listed, then no one would have secrets. Everything will be laid bare, ruining any surprise attack and alerting your enemy.
'He's health increased. What is this vitality stat?' Cristian rubbed his chin and pondered. There was nothing like vitality in his status screen, and he was much better than that soldier.
His eyes shone as he realized something. 'Level ten,' he mused inwardly. The soldier only surpassed him in level. So what gave him the stats must be his higher level.
And to confirm his guess, he checked others and his guess became a reality. To increase his health. He must reach level ten.
"What's your name? It will be hard to communicate when we don't know each other's names." Sheila's lovely voice woke him from his thoughts.
A diagram small diagram hovered at her chest level, the runes in her eyes made her beauty soar to that of an ethereal beauty.
"I'm Shelia Banning, daughter of Luke Banning and Anna's elder step-sister." Her fluent words and tone stunned Cristian.
"Cristian," he said softly.
"Just Cristian? But you said you were a Lord thrown from his abode." Her brows rose, making the bluish runes in her eyes more visible. Cristian could see it matched the same one hovering outside the wall.
"I never told you that," he retorted. When did he say he was thrown away?!
"If you were not, then what is a Lord doing here? I did not take you for the type to lie, Cristian, but it turns out you are more despicable than I thought." Sheila's cold judgment made the surrounding soldiers feel giddy.
She took a step closer and leaned. "It's cute though." Cristian's eyes widened. He felt the urge to stroke her silky blue hair, but that might be a wrong move.
Voom! The diagram glowed brighter and a light beam illuminated the forest, revealing huge, gray dire wolves. Their numbers made some soldiers stiff.
"Don't underestimate me," she whispered, for she had won against him since Cristian was the speechless one.
"I won't flirt or do anything with men like you who only seek the pleasures of a woman." her alluring whisper made him smile.
Little did the blue-haired beauty know that she was flirting with him at this moment. Maybe to her, it wasn't, but to the soldiers.
They had considered her gone. Some had begun to curse Cristian to disgrace himself in bed, for their mage was gone.
"I know," Cristian replied and walked away. Sheila suddenly felt strange, but that feeling vanished as the wolves bolted toward the walls.
[Copy clones: create several copies of a particular skill and they will act according to the original. Does not function in all skills]
[Mortal tier skill {primary level}]
The moment Shelia activated the skill, the diagram became three and shot fireballs. Boom! Boom!
Explosions rang, but only a few wolves were harmed, but it slowed them down, giving the soldiers time to prepare themselves for impact.
The few with bows did what they could to reduce the number, but their measly strength was nothing before the huge, muscular wolves.
Sheila frowned. At the primary level, she could only make two copies of the original skill. If she could summon ten, then these wolves would have no choice but to lose a massive number.
"BRACE YOURSELVES!" a man with an average physique and thick beard hollered. His grip on his axe tightened, and he got ready to engage.
Like mindless puppets, the wolves braced the fireballs and the measly number of arrows. Some were hit at critical spots and died, but more covered the space.
In a matter of minutes, the wolves had reached the five-meter wall and each of them was two meters tall.
Cristian stared down and sighted a wolf growling. Saliva poured from its mouth and its piercing blood-red eyes met with his.
Grra!
Another wolf stepped on the first wolf and leaped. Cristian could hear the whimpers of the first wolf as its spinal cord might have snapped.
He leaned back, and the gleaming claws of the gray wolf swooshed past his face. He had forgotten to draw his sword because of his inexperience.
The wolf dug its claws into the wood and climbed up. Its towering height and dripping mouth painted a sight that brought both excitement and chill.
"What are you doing!" a soldier shouted. He lifted his sword and swung down, but the agile wolf dogged it and bit the soldier's arm.
"Argh!! My arm!" he screamed with red eyes.
Suddenly, the air got warm as a flaming blade had been drawn.
